Example 3.1: Problem Statement
Determine the phase or phases in a system consisting of H 2O at
the following conditions and find specific volume, internal energy
for each conditions.

Sketch p–v and T–v diagrams showing the location of each state:

a) p=5 bar, T=151.9°C.

b) p=5 bar, T=200°C.

Example 3.1: Solution
Finding State:
1
If pressure and temperature 1. Compressed liquid 2
4
is known: 2. Saturated liquid 3
5
3. Saturated liquid-vapor
Find the saturated pressure at 4. Saturated vapor
given temp. or saturated temp. 5. Superheated vapor
at given pressure from
saturated tables

Compare saturated condition

with given conditions and find
the state

Use the related table 5

3 4
At given pressure, find the 2
properties 1
[1]
Finding State: > Can’t draw the actual curve
without more information (x value)
a) 1

2 4
If pressure and temperature P=5 bar, T=151.9⁰C 3
is known: 5

A-2:
Find the saturated pressure at
Tsat=151.9°C, 4.758 <Psat<6.178 bar
given temp. or saturated temp.
at given pressure from A-3:
saturated tables Psat= 5 bar, Tsat=151.9°C

Tsat=151.9°C, 4.758 <Psat<6.178 bar

Compare saturated condition So it is liquid-vapor mixture
with given conditions and find Psat= 5 bar, Tsat=151.9°C
the state T=Tsat so it could be 2,3,4.

Use the related table Table A-3 for saturated water.

At given pressure, find the v=1.0926*10-3 m3/kg, u=639.68 kJ/kg 1
properties Vapor
[1]
v=0.3749 m3/kg, u=2561.2 kJ/kg
Finding State:
b)
If pressure and temperature P=5 bar, T=200⁰C
is known:

Find the saturated pressure Table A-2: Tsat=200°C, Psat=15.54

at given temp. or saturated bar
temp. at given pressure from P<Psat so it is superheated.
saturated tables Table A-3:Psat= 5 bar, Tsat=151.9°C
T>Tsat so it is superheated.
Compare saturated condition
with given conditions and
find the state

Table A-4 for superheated water.

Use the related table

At given pressure, find the v=0.4249 m3/kg, u=2642.9 kJ/kg,

properties h=2855.4 kJ/kg

T=200 ⁰C T=200 ⁰C
P=5 bar P=5 bar
