AST in CLABSI Cases

What is AST?

 Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing

 Laboratory procedure performed by medical technologists to identify which antimicrobial

regimen is specifically effective for individual patients.
 Antibiotic sensitivity testing or antibiotic susceptibility testing is the measurement of the
susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics.
 Sensitivity testing results can allow a clinician to change the choice of antibiotics from
empiric therapy, which is when an antibiotic is selected based on clinical suspicion about
the site of an infection and common causative bacteria, to directed therapy, in which the
choice of antibiotic is based on knowledge of the organism and its sensitivities.
What do the results mean?

Results are usually described in one of the following ways:

Susceptible. The tested medicine stopped the growth or killed the bacteria or fungus causing
your infection. The medicine may be a good choice for treatment.
Intermediate. The medicine may work at a higher dose.
 Resistant. The medicine did not stop the growth or kill the bacteria or fungus causing the
infection. It would not be a good choice for treatment.
Case 1

 Patient was admitted on date 26/02/24 .

 Date of event – 4/03/24

CASE 2 : AST REPORT
INTERPRETATION OF AST

 The pathogen was sensitive to Ampicillin / Sulbactam, Minocycline, Trimetazidine

 It is resistant to Tobramycin, ceftazidine, Pip/Taz
