Symmetry

in
Art

Grade 7
By Mrs. Amira Said
What is Symmetry in Art?

It means one-half is the mirror image of the other half.

The imaginary line or axis along which you can fold a
figure to obtain the symmetrical halves is called the line of
symmetry.
-the four types of symmetry:

While designers most

often use the symmetrical
balance, most painters
tend to look towards the
slight shifts that are
available in:
1. inverted symmetry.
2. near symmetry.
3. biaxial symmetry.
4. radial symmetry.
-Where do we use symmetry in real life?

there is an human symmetry in the

kidneys, lungs, and the brain. If you
draw a line or slice these organs in
half, you will have a mirror image of
the other. In flowers and leaves. also
in snowflakes, sunflowers, and
starfish to sharks, symmetry is in
everywhere in nature.
-examples of symmetry balance .

A good example of symmetrical balance in nature is

the human face. If you were to draw a line down
the middle of your face, you would have two sides
that have the exact same design.
Symmetry of the Butterfly.
Linking symmetry with mathematics.

Symmetry in math is
the property of an
object to be able to
be divided into two
identical mirror
halves.
Your Art Work
I'd like to see your symmetrical artwork for a
butterfly in your art sketchbook for the next class
in a Rectangle area 25 x 20 cm using your tools and
colors.
