BY AIR POLLUTION

AIR POLLUTION
•Significant cause of morbidity and
mortility
•Dangerous in individuals with pre
existing pulmonary and heart diseases
•Found in both indoor and outdoor air
OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTANT
• Pollutants generated by
• Combustion of fossil fuels
• Industrial processes
• Agricultural processes
MAJOR OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTANTS
• Ozone
• Sulfur dioxide
• Oxides of nitrogen
• Carbon monoxide
• Particulate matter
OZONE
• Bad ozone formed in the lower atmosphere
• Formed by the action of sunlight on oxides
of nitrogen
• Produces free radical which damage the
cells of respiratory tract and alveoli
• Releases inflammatory mediators
SULFUR DIOXIDE
Generated by
• Burning fossil fuels
• Copper smelting
• From paper mills
• These particles reach the alveoli are phagocytosed by macrophages
and neutrophil
• Sulfuric acid and sulfuric trioxide cause
• Burning sensation in nose
• Difficulty in breathing
OXIDES OF NITROGEN
Generated by
• Burning fossil fuels
• Generating electricity
• Acute exposure cause airway hyperreactivity
CARBON MONOXIDE
• Non irritating,colorless,tasteless,odourless gas
• Formed by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials
• Chronic poisoning in persons working in confined spaces
• CO is a systemic asphyxiant
• Binds with Hb to form carboxyhemoglobin
• Hypoxia leads to CNS depression
• 60-70% saturation causes death
OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTTANTS
INDOOR AIR POLLUTION
• Most common pollutant is tobacco smoke,CO,nitrogen dioxide and
asbestos
• Smoke from burning organic materials
• Lung infections
• Contain carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons
RADON
Present in soil and homes
• Causes lung cancer in uranium miners

BIOAEROSOLS
• Pathogenic microbiologic agents
• Viral pneumonia,common cold
• Allergens pet dander,dust mites,fungi
