• Tape Measure
A flexible measuring
device used in taking
body measurements.

• Sewing Gauge
A small ruler with a
sliding guide. The
gauge is usually made
of metal or plastic.
• Rulers
It is a useful tool to
have for measuring
and drawing straight
seam lines and
cutting lines.

• Yardstick
A yardstick is
made of smooth,
shellacked
hardwood or metal.
• See-through
ruler – It is used
for making
straight edges
and parallel
lines,
buttonholes,
tucks, and pleats.
• Seam Gauge – It
is used to make
accurate
measurements for
seam allowances,
hems, pleats,
buttonholes, and
alteration.
• Hem Guide –
It is used for
measuring
straight and
curved seams
and hems.
• Skirt-Hem
Marker – It is
used to mark
skirt hem
quickly and
accurately.

The tailor square is used
to transfer measurements
to the draft pattern. It also
divides the garment into
the desired measurement.
• French Curve
This is used to
shape the depth
of the neck hole
and armhole of
the pattern.

Example of English to Metric:
• Feet into Meter ( 1 foot = 3.28 meter)
Ex. 82 feet = 25 meter
82 divided by 3.28

• Inches into Centimeters ( 1 inch = 2.54 cm)
Ex. 50 inches = 127 cm
2.54 x 50 = 127

• Meter into Feet (to convert meter into
feet, divide the length in meter by .30)

inches, multiple the length in meters by 39.37)
