Tesselations
1. What is tessellation ?
A tessellation, or tiling, is a pattern made by repeating a geometric shape on a surface,
such as a floor or a flat wall, with no gaps or overlaps. It can be a tiling made with one
or more shapes, like a regular tessellation that repeats a regular polygon or a
tessellation that uses one or more rectangles. A tessellation can fill an entire surface
and have unique properties, such as symmetry. Strategies for creating a tessellation
may include arranging the shapes randomly or creating a pattern that has defined rules.
Tessellations are used in art, architecture, and fashion design, and can also be used to
make repeating patterns for graphic or logo designs. They can be an effective way to
create a simple, yet aesthetically pleasing visual design.
2. What is the connection between tessellation and maths?

Tessellation is a repeating pattern of polygons that covers a plane with no gaps or overlaps. In mathematics,
tessellation is related to geometry, particularly in the study of shapes, angles, and patterns. It involves
concepts such as symmetry, transformations, and the relationships between shapes and space.
Mathematically, tessellation is closely connected to the study of regular and semi-regular tilings, which
involves understanding the properties of polygons and how they can fit together to cover a surface without
any gaps.

Tessellation is also significant in the field of geometry, as it has applications in art, design, architecture, and
even in understanding certain aspects of crystal structures and molecular arrangements. In mathematics,
tessellations are often used to demonstrate concepts related to symmetry, congruence, and transformations.
Therefore, the connection between tessellation and mathematics is deeply rooted in the study of shapes,
patterns, and spatial relationships.
To make tessellation does one need technology?
Tessellation is a process that involves dividing a surface into smaller, repeating shapes or
patterns. While it is possible to create tessellations manually, technology can greatly assist
in the process.

Technology can be helpful in creating tessellations for several reasons:

1. Accuracy: Technology can help ensure that the shapes are accurately repeated and
symmetrical, which is crucial in creating a cohesive tessellation pattern.
2. Speed: Technology can help speed up the process of creating tessellations, allowing
artists to focus on the creative aspects rather than spending time on manual calculations.
3. Flexibility: Technology allows artists to easily modify and experiment with different
patterns and shapes, making it easier to create unique and intricate designs.
4. Scalability: With technology, artists can scale their tessellations to fit different sizes and
formats, making it easier to create large-scale designs or tiny, intricate patterns.
In terms of SOI, technology can play a significant role in fostering creativity and innovation in the field of
tessellations. By providing a platform for artists to experiment and explore different patterns and designs,
technology can help drive innovation and push the boundaries of what is possible in tessellation art.

Furthermore, technology can also help artists collaborate and share their work with a wider audience, inspiring
others and promoting creativity within the art community.

In conclusion, while it is possible to create tessellations manually, technology can significantly aid the process by
providing accuracy, speed, flexibility, and scalability. By leveraging technology, artists can focus on the creative
aspects of tessellation art and push the boundaries of what is possible, ultimately fostering innovation and creativity
in the field.
FA1 : Research on Translations, Rotational and Reflection Tessellation with
images and citation

Translations - a translation refers to a type of symmetry

transformation that involves moving a shape or pattern along a
certain direction by a specific distance. In tessellations,
translations are used to create repeating patterns by moving a
single shape or a group of shapes by a certain amount, usually
in a linear or rotational manner. The distance and direction of
the translation can vary, resulting in different patterns and
designs.

Rotations- otation refers to a type of symmetry

transformation that involves rotating a shape or pattern
around a fixed point by a certain angle. This transformation
helps create repeating patterns by rotating a single shape or
a group of shapes around a central point, creating the
illusion of continuous movement.
Reflection - Reflection refers to a type of symmetry
transformation that involves reflecting a shape or pattern over a
line or axis. This transformation helps create repeating patterns
by reflecting a single shape or a group of shapes over a central
line or axis, creating the illusion of continuous movement.

A3. It is a good medium that can be very easy to

understand once you learn the basic rules of
translations.

dont completely understand how math and
tesselations can be related in any way.
Reflection:
What did you do in this medium(steps)?
What do you learn through this medium?
Will you use it for your final artwork?
Did you use maths to tessellate and how?
A1. - I started by selecting a basic shape as the foundation of your tessellation. Common
shapes include squares, triangles, or hexagons. So i chose a triangle.
- I created a pattern within the basic shape that I have to repeat through rotation. I just A4. I definitely use math in this medium
drew some random lines onto the cutout. exploration but in the form of symetry.
- This is the point around which the shape will rotate. This was a bit difficult but I got Symetry is a very easy cocept to understand
and after using this medium it became much
the hang of it
more clearer to me as a concept.
- I rotated my basic shape around the center of rotation. I have to ensure that the design
I created in step 2 aligns seamlessly during each rotation.
- I just repreated the rotation after to create a pattern. Thisn was a difficult step but it got
easier time after time.
- I had to fill the space so when I reached the end of the top portion of the paper. I had to
adjust the angle of rotation.

A2. In this method I learned how to trust the process while rotating the
cutout in different directions. It seemed very difficult for me to
understand but then I got the hang of it.

A3. I probably would not want to use this for my final art work because after you
have created a pattern it becomes difficult to know where you have to rotate next.
In this medium, I was watching a video and took some origami paper to
start creating an origami tesselation. Origami is a Japanese art technique
that requires numerous folds to create a wonderful shape. I decided to
tesselate the Yoshimura pattern. I first took the paper and started folding it
according to the instructions in the video. After following the step-by-step
procedure given I started making 2-3 more pieces of the Yoshimura
tesselation.
In this medium I learned the intricate style of japanese origami and how
delicate and precise the folds need to be. I also learned that if the folds are
not correct the entire creation can get destroyed and damaged.

I personally really like this medium because of the results of all the
folding. i find this very beautiful and It shows the beautiful design being
created. I find it very amazing because of all of these folds.
