THE

NERVOUS
SYSTEM
Controls / monitors all the other
organ systems of the body.
Responsible for thought,
learning, thinking, memory,
judgement, emotions and
decision-making.
The central
nervous system
(CNS) is the brain
and spinal cord,
and
the peripheral
nervous system
(PNS) is
everything else
(nerve cells).

THE NEURON OR NERVE CELL-
sends message/impulses/signals
to and from the brain
NEURON OR NERVE CELL
The basic unit of the nervous system is a nerve
cell, or neuron.
The human brain contains about 100 billion
neurons.
Dendrites-receives signals from other neurons and
pass it to the cell body.
Axon -responsible for generating and transmitting
impulses away from the cell body.
· Sensory nerves also known as afferent nerves carry
impulses from sensory receptors towards the brain.
· Motor nerves also known as efferent nerves, carry
impulses away from the brain to muscles and glands
· The interneurons sit in the middle of other neurons,
such as motor or sensory neurons. They are responsible
for relaying electrical signals
· Synapse is a junction between two neurons or a neuron
and a target or effector cell such as a muscle cell. It
permits the transmission of electrical or chemical
signals.
Synapses refer to the
points of contact
between neurons
where information is
passed from one
neuron to the next.
Synapses most often
form between axons
and dendrites, and
consist of a
presynaptic neuron,
synaptic cleft, and a
postsynaptic neuron.
HOW DO THE KINDS OF NEURONS WORK?
Sensory neurons send information from the
eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin to the
brain. Motor neurons carry messages away
from the brain to the rest of the body to allow
muscles to move. These connections make up
the way we think, learn, move, and feel.
 Interneurons carry information between
sensory and motor neurons.
