I. Use:
 The present perfect tense shows action in the
indefinite past. The present perfect tense is also
used to show action begun in the past and
continuing into the present.
- The present perfect is used to describe the
current effects of a past action. The result of the
actions can be seen.
 For instance: He has had an accident.
 I have written a lot of lessons.
- It is used to establish a link between the
present tense and the past tense. In this case it is
used with “Since and For”
 For instance :
We have known each other for 5 years.
This couple has got married since 2002.
- It is used to express recent past. In this
case, it is used with “Just”. (S+have or has+vpp)

 For instance : I have just eaten some rice.
 Oumou has just gone home.
 Present perfect is used with some abverbs such as since, for,
already, yet …
 Examples:
 We have already had our breakfast.
 Has the post arrived yet?
 He has been to Lagos since 2018.
 He has been to Lagos for 4 years.
II. Formation

 How do we form the Present Perfect?


We form the Present Perfect with the auxiliary
“to have” into simple present and the past participle of
the main verb.
* regular verbs: infinitive + -ed;/d/ied
* irregular verbs: 3rd column of the table of the
irregular verbs)
 has → 3rd person singular (he, she, it, Ali, Fanta)
have → all other forms (I, You, We, They, The
students)
III. Different Forms
 Affirmative form:
(S+HAVE/HAS+PP+Object)
 Examples:

The Doctor has given an injection to the patient.


These medicines have cured me.
Dr. Sangare’s wife has given birth to a boy.
That Doctor has tried to kill this baby.
 Negative form:
(S+HAVE/HAS + NOT+ PP+Object)
( Haven’t/hasn’t )
The Doctor has not given an injection to the patient.
These medicines haven’t cured me.
Dr. Sangare’s wife hasn’t given birth to a boy.
That Doctor has not tried to kill this baby.
 Interrogative form
(HAVE/HAS+S+PP+Object + ?)

Has the Doctor given an injection to the patient?


Have these medicines cured me?
Has Dr. Sangare’s wife given birth to a boy?
Has hat Doctor tried to kill this baby?
Evaluation

 Put the verbs between brackets into present perfect.
