General Information
History :
Mauritius has long been a dream destination.
Known to the Arabs as early as the 10th century, but officially in
1505 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarenhas.
The island was occupied successively by the Dutch (1598-1712)
and the French (1715-1810), and was ceded to Great Britain in
1814 through the Treaty of Paris.
On 12 March 1968, Mauritius became Independent. Republic Day
was proclaimed on 12 March 1992.

Culture :
Mauritius is a blend of diverse cultures and religions. The
population consists of Hindus, Creole, Chinese, Muslims and
Europeans. 3

Climate
The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 22°C in winter
and 34°C in summer. In the central part of the island, the maximum
daytime temperature varies from about 19°C in August to about
26°C in February.

Mauritius is a shopping paradise.


Visit the market in Port-Louis.
Shopping hours: Monday to Saturday (06:00-
18:00) & Sunday (06:00-12:00)
Shop for : Tablecloths and fabrics, basketwork as
well as a wealth of spices. Colourful Indian and
Chinese 'boutiques' offering an improbable variety
of household articles.
You can also find leading brands of shirts,
trousers, suits, dresses, suits for women, shorts or
swimwear at unbeatable prices.
Basketwork, embroidery, pottery, cut stones and
recycled glass are very much in demand.

On your full day tour visit the town of Curepipe.
Next visit Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct crater right in the middle of the island.
Later visit sacred lake of Grand Bassin (Ganga Taloa), where you will
come across the biggest natural reservoir of the island and the Black River
Gorges National Park view point.
And lastly visit Chamarel waterfall and the unique Seven Coloured Earth
of Chamarel.
