How can a manufacturer benefit from the
Copyright Act?

 Copyright is the engine of progress. It encourages creativity and innovation and enables
producers to benefit financially. You may have come across the words ‘copyright
protected’ on many items you buy. They include movie DVDs, music, books, computer
software and a myriad of other things. The term implies they are protected by copyright
laws, and only the holders have the right to sell and profit from these products.

What is Plagiarism?

 Plagiarism is derived from the Latin word “Plagiarius” meaning “kidnapper”. Plagiarism
means stealing or copying another’s work and representing it as own work. On Internet,
everything is available for free. We can share, upload, download, view, or search any
text, audio, and video. Everything is there for free. The availability of anything and
everything on the internet has made our lives easier but people make misuse of this
advantage of the internet by representing other’s work as their own for fame, for
academic benefits, for money, for personal interests, etc.

How is the Knowledge of plagiarism
important to you when doing research?

 What is Plagiarism? What are Ethics? Why is Research Ethics important? Plagiarism
includes someone else’s idea or works with your name in your research without
permission or proper reference. Ethics are the morals and principles that govern your
actions and behaviour. These are the principles that form the thin layer between the
buckets of rights and wrongs, professional and unprofessional, and the acceptable and
unacceptable human behaviour. Values can be different, but moreover, Ethics are the
same for all.

What is a Trademark?

 According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, a trademark is “a word, phrase, symbol or design that identifies your goods and
services” and distinguishes your brand from competitors. A trademark is used for goods, while a service mark is used for services. A
trademark gives you the exclusive right to use your mark and helps prevent competitors from using a mark that’s the same as or very
similar to yours.

Importance of Trademarks

 Firstly, trademarks are important because they serve as a unique marker of identity. One
look at the trademark, and the consumer connects it with a company. It could be the name
on the logo, the design, and the colours. Consumers do not even have to read the words
to figure out what it means. One look should tell them what it is all about. For example,
the shoe brand Nike doesn’t always have the words on its logo, but most people know
what the brand is all about.
