PRESENTATION OUTLINE INTRODUCTION PROBLEM STATEMENT OBJECTIVES OF STUDY SCOPE OF STUDY METHODOLOGY SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY INTRODUCTION Batteries serve as crucial energy storage solutions powering a wide range of applications from portable electronics to renewable energy systems. This project aims to investigate the consequences of over and undercharging on the performance, lifespan, and safety of DC batteries. The study will focus on commonly used DC battery chemistries, including lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. DC Batteries performance and lifespan are heavily reliant on proper charging practices. PROBLEM STATEMENT Overcharging and undercharging are common issues in battery management systems that can lead to various adverse effects, including reduced capacity, accelerated degradation, and safety hazards. The lack of standardized charging protocols across various battery chemistries and applications complicates interoperability between charging equipment and battery systems. Many batteries lack sophisticated charging algorithms capable of adjusting charging parameters based on battery conditions and environmental factors. Lack of awareness and training among end users regarding proper battery charging practices. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Investigate the Impact of Overcharging on Battery Performance Examine the effects of undercharging on battery capacity, voltage regulation, and energy storage capabilities Compare and contrast the severity of damage caused by overcharging vs. undercharging for different battery chemistries (e.g., Lithium-ion, Lead-acid). Propose strategies to implement effective battery monitoring systems to prevent overcharging and undercharging. SCOPE OF STUDY Battery Types Considered: The study will focus on analyzing the effects of over and under charging on commonly used DC battery chemistries, potentially including: Lithium-ion (Li-ion) and Lead-acid. Charging Scenarios: The project will investigate a range of voltage and current levels for both over and undercharging scenarios. Performance Parameters: The study will quantify the impact of charging practices on key battery performance metrics Thermal Analysis: The project will explore the thermal consequences of improper charging practices Mitigation Strategies: Based on the findings, the project may explore potential methods to mitigate the negative effects of over and under charging, such as: Developing charging strategies with voltage regulation or current limiting techniques. METHODOLOGY The study involves the use battery testing equipment, including charge-discharge cyclers, voltage and current sensors, and temperature monitors, to conduct controlled charging experiments. Overcharging and undercharging will be simulated by applying predetermined voltage and current profiles, with adjustments made to mimic realistic charging scenarios. During the testing phase, monitor and record key battery parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, and capacity throughout the charge cycle. Analyze the collected data to identify trends and quantify the degradation caused by over and undercharging. SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY Improved Battery Performance and Lifespan: By understanding the specific ways over and undercharging damage different battery chemistries, this project will help develop better charging protocols. Enhanced User Experience: Clearer guidelines on optimal charging practices will empower users to make informed choices that maximize battery health and avoid unknowingly damaging their devices. Advancement of Battery Technology: The findings from this research can inform the development of next-generation battery management systems (BMS) that can intelligently adjust charging parameters based on battery type, application requirements, and environmental factors. Standardized Charging Protocols: This project can contribute to the development of standardized charging protocols that ensure consistent and optimal charging practices across different devices and battery types.
