The search engine’s internal evaluation algorithm determines which

position a website will get in the search results.

:Google, Bing and Yahoo are examples of popular search engines.

How to research with a search engine?
Figure out what you need to know
It helps to start out by writing down everything you already know about your topic and what you
think you may need to know for your report. If you don’t know anything about your topic, you
can also try an encyclopedia website like “Encyclopedia Britannica,” or talk to a librarian or your
teacher.
Combine keywords to focus your search
If you just search for “George Washington,” you will find lots of information that might not
necessary for your report. Use several keywords inside quotation marks” to focus your research
results and use what you learn on one site to help you focus your next search.
Double-check your information
Look for sites that list their references and source materials, which will explain where the author
found the information. Always double-check the information you find on the Internet against an
offline trusted resource to make sure it is correct. Do not be fooled by Ms Information.
Bookmark reliable sites
When you find a site that is a good resource, add it to your web browser favorites or bookmarks
so you can find it again easily. You never know when you until need it again, and sites you know
to bereliable are a great place to start when researching a new topic.
City Challenge
Using the search engine, search about the city you want to see. Record all the interesting information you find
and write it on the space provided below.

Here’s how you can easily get information from a newspaper:
1. Look at the picture! Most newspaper articles come with a picture that relates
to the story. Pictures are rich sources of information, for example if the article is
about the discovery of some dinosaur bones the writer might add a diagram of a
human standing next to the dinosaur to show you how big the dinosaur was. This
is called scale.
2. The first two sentences of the article are normally a summary of the entire
article. This means that you can decide whether or not you want to read it very
quickly. If it doesn’t interest you, then move to another article.
3. Articles normally contain foreground and background information.
Foreground information is more specific, more in depth, and tends to be the most
current information.
Let us see How to Speed Read a Magazine through this simple steps.

A. Step #1 – Read the First and Last Paragraph. In well written material, the first
paragraph is usually an introduction to what you are about to read in the
article.

B. Step #2 – Read the First Sentence of Every Paragraph. Do this to familiarize

yourself with the main ideas in an article.

C. Step #3 – Read the Entire Article. Think about the last two steps you did. You
read the first and last paragraph, and then the first sentence of every
paragraph.
