Multiplication of Polynomials

• Multiplying polynomials involves applying the

rules of exponents and the distributive
property to simplify the product.

• Understanding polynomial products is an

important step in learning to solve algebraic
equations involving polynomials.
Multiplying two monomials
(1 term x 1 term)

(2𝑥3)(3𝑥2)
To get the product of these monomials, multiply the
coefficients and the variables separately then put them
together to arrive at the final answer.
Solution:

= (2•3)(𝑥2•𝑥3)
= (6)(𝑥2+3)
= 6𝑥5
Multiplying monomial by binomial
(1 term x 2 terms)

(4𝑦)(2𝑦2+5𝑦)
• To multiply monomial by binomial,
distribute the single term to each term of
the binomial.

• Solution: Apply the Distributive Property

and the Product Rule for exponents.
Multiplying monomial by trinomial
(1 term x 3 terms)

3𝑥 (5𝑥2+2𝑥+3)
• To multiply monomial by trinomial, distribute the single
term to each term of the trinomial.
• Solution: Apply the Distributive Property and the
Product Rule for exponents.
• Perform multiplication horizontally, we could also
perform it vertically. Vertical multiplication is not
necessary with monomials. It is however essential when
multiplying polynomials of two or more terms.
Multiplying two binomials
(2 terms x 2 terms)
(𝑥+3)(𝑥+1)
• To multiply two binomials together, you can use an easy to
remember method called FOIL. FOIL stands for First,
Outer, Inner, Last.
• STEPS:
Step 1:Multiply the first terms in each binomial.
Step 2:Multiply the outer terms in each binomial.
Step 3:Multiply the inner terms in each binomial.
Step 4:Multiply the last terms in each binomial.
Step 5:Combine like terms.
Multiplying polynomial by polynomial
(2 terms x 3 terms)

(𝑥+4)(2𝑥2+3𝑥+6)
• One way to multiply polynomials is the grid or
lattice method. This is actually just like
distribution method except everything goes
right into a handy grid.
• You can use this method to multiply trinomial
by trinomial or any type of polynomials.
Multiplying polynomial by polynomial
(2 terms x 3 terms)

(𝑥+4)(2𝑥2+3𝑥+6)
STEPS:
Step 1: Make a grid
Step 2: Put each term in one of the polynomials across
the top and the terms of the other polynomial
down the left side.
Step 3:In each box in the grid, fill in the product of the
term for the row times the term for the column.
Step 4: Combine like terms.
TRY THIS:Find
each product.
