The Basic Values of the

Filipino People.
We can be good citizens of the Republic if we are to adhere to
the basic values enshrined and stipulated in Preamble of our 1987
Philippine Constitution. These are unity, patriotism, faith in
Almighty God, respect for life, respect for law and Government,
work, truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, peace, promotion of
the common, concern for environment, and order. These values
serve as the guiding principles in our life as a nation and provide
the underlying framework for all provisions of the Constitution.

For an adult, his basic values can be seen in his outward

manifestations as well as in decision-making. There is always a
consistency in what he thinks and feels and what he says.
Every Filipino child needs to be helped to form his own
values consistent with basic Filipino values, if he is to
grow into a citizen who is “maka-Dios, maka-tao,
maka-bayan, and maka-kalikasan.”

Hereunder are the values of Good Citizenship together

with the different verses from the Bible as well as
quotations from notable persons.
Philosophy of Values
understanding the philosophy of human
values is necessary in understanding
Filipinos values such as family closeness
and solidarity
( pagpapahalaga sa pamilya ) politness
(use of po or ho ), hospitality, and
gratitude
(utang na loob)
The Good Citizenship Value of Faith in the Almighty
Jesus said to them “Have faith in God. Whoever says
to the mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown to the sea’, and does
not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will
happen, it shall be done for him”.

Mark 11:22-23

Filipinos should show their faith in God. Everybody should reflect on the
blessings of God in their lives as and how they can continue to live a life of faith
in God.
FILIPINO VALUES
1. It is obvious that certain values take on for us a distinctively
Filipino flavor. The Greek ideal of moderation or meden aga, the
Roman in medio stat virtus and the Confucian and Buddhist
doctrine of the Middle, find their Filipino equivalent in Hindi Labis,
hindi kulang, katamtaman lamang

2. Speaking of Filipino values, we do not mean that elements of

these Filipino values are absent in the value systems of other
peoples and cultures. All people eat, talk, and sing; but they eat
different foods, speak various languages and sing different songs.
For instance, China and Japan cultures give great value to
politeness and beauty ; American culture to promptness and
efficiency ; and Filipino culture to spirituality and family
centeredness. In this value- ranking and priority of values., we can
speak dominant Filipino values.
3. Universally human values in the Filipino context (historical, cultural ,
socioeconomics, political, moral, and religious, ) take on a distinctive set of
Filipino meanings and motivations, This is true not only of the aims and goals,
beliefs , convictions and social principles of the traditional value system of the
lowland rural family but also of what Fr. Horacio de la Costa, SJ calls the Filipino
“nationalistics “ tradition (pagsasarili, pagkakaisa, pakikisama, pakipagkapwa –
tao and pagkakabayani.

A Filipino value does not exist alone, in isolation, or in a vacuum. Filipino values
like bahala na, utang na loob , hiya, pakikisama, and pakiusap are clustered around
core values like social acceptance, economics security
social mobility and are always found in a definite values varies from different
period of the history.

4, Values in the sense of historical consciousness had evolved among Filipino

people, leading to the concept of justice evolving from inequality to equality and
to human dignity.

From historical perspective, the question to ask about Filipino values is Ganito
kami noon ; paano kayo ngayon,
