Week 1
Day 1
Relationship of Solid Figures
Recap on finding the surface area.
Directions: Identify the formula used in finding the surface
area of the following. Choose the letter of the correct
answer.

______1. Cube
______2. Cylinder
______3. Ice cream cone
______4. Globe
______5. Shoe box
Show the different figures to the class.
Let the pupils identify each figure.
Volume refers to the amount of space
inside a three-dimensional solid. It is
measured in cubic units such as cubic
centimeters (cu cm or cm³), and cubic
meters ( cu m or m3 ). The number of such
units needed to fill a figure is its volume.
What do the 3 edges refer to? length,
width, and height Look at the figures
below. The volume of any rectangular
prism is V = l x w x h.
We can use the diagram below to show
why the formula of any prism works.
To find the volume (V) of a prism, multiply
the number of cubic units need to cover
the base (B) by the number of layers (h).
So, for any prism, Volume (V) = base area
(B) x height (h)
What is the relationship between the
volumes of pyramids and prisms?

When a prism and pyramid have the same

base and height, the volume of the
pyramid is 1/3 of the volume of the prism.
What is the relationship between the
volumes of a cylinder and a cone?

In the same way, when a cone and a

cylinder have the same base and height ,
the volume of the cone is one-third the
volume of the cylinder.
What is the relationship between the volumes
of a cylinder and sphere? Imagine this same
circle as the base of a cylinder that exactly
contains the sphere. The height of a cylinder
is twice that of the radius of the sphere. The
volume of this cylinder would be the area of
its base times its height, which is
Therefore, the volume of the sphere is
Find the volume:

I=3, w=5, h=11

I=6, w=7, h=2
