HANDLING OF

INSTRUMENTS
Vernier Caliper
Before using your caliper you should wipe
the measuring faces with a rag to make
sure that they are clean.

After use, it is important that you check

the beam of your vernier caliper for any
unwanted residue that may affect the
sliding motion of the vernier scale.
Apply a small drop of oil to the beam of the caliper, clean it
off with a cloth and slide the vernier scale backwards and
forwards a couple of times.
Vernier Caliper
Absolutely do not apply an external
voltage to the Digital Caliper, by such as
an electric engraver.
It may cause a trouble.

Avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures,

low temperatures, and high humidity
during storage.

Do not use the gage outside the temperature range of 0°C

to 40°C. for precision measurements, the ambient
temperature must be maintained as close to 20°C as
possible with minimum fluctuation.
Vernier Caliper
Vernier calipers should be stored
somewhere dry and humid-free.
Most calipers come with a protective case
to keep them safe when not in use.

You should regularly check the calibration

of your caliper, to make sure that it is
working correctly.
Micrometer
Before using your micrometer, it is
important to ensure that the anvil and
spindle are clean.
Lightly clamp a clean sheet of paper and
pull the paper from between the
measuring faces to remove any unwanted
dirt.
Micrometer
You should also clean the surface of the
object you are measuring to ensure that
the measurements you are taking are
accurate.

Regularly wipe the circumference of the

spindle and both measuring faces with a
dry, lint-free cloth.

Be careful not to drop your micrometer.

If you have accidentally damaged your
micrometer, ensure that it is inspected for
accuracy before taking measurements.
Micrometer
Don’t lay unit where it could fall.

Regularly wipe the circumference of the

spindle and both measuring faces with a
dry, lint-free cloth.

Be careful not to drop your micrometer.

If you have accidentally damaged your
micrometer, ensure that it is inspected for
accuracy before taking measurements.
You may need to recalibrate your
micrometer.
Micrometer
Every so often, or after the micrometer
has been in storage for an extended
period, apply a small amount of multi-
purpose oil to its exterior using a lint free
cloth to prevent corrosion and rust.
It would also be prudent to oil the internal
thread of the micrometer if the micrometer
is used very occasionally or unlikely to be
used for many months.
Make sure that you store your micrometer
in a ventilated place with low humidity, and
ideally at room temperature.
Micrometer
Most micrometers come with a protective
storage case to keep them safe when not
in use.
When not using the micrometer, ensure
that there is a gap between the measuring
faces.
If the spindle and anvil are in contact with
each other, the accuracy of the
micrometer could be affected.

Don’t twirl micrometer to open or close a

great distance.
Digital Height Gauge
Clean the working platform and put the
digital height gauge on it.

Dry the surface of the protective sticker of

the digital height gauge.

Clean the measuring jaw of the height

gauge..
Digital Height Gauge
Keep the column, which
guides the slider, clean. If dust
or dirt accumulates
on it, sliding becomes difficult,
leading to errors in setting and
measuring.

Parallelism between the scriber measuring face and the

base reference surface should be 0.01 mm or better.
Remove any dust or burrs on the mounting surface when
installing the scriber or lever-type dial indicator before
measurement. Keep the scriber and other parts securely
fixed in place during measurement.
Digital Height Gauge
Handling after use: Completely
wipe away any water and oil.
Lightly apply a thin coating of anti-
corrosion oil and let dry before
storage.

Do not use the gage at sites where

it will be exposed to oil, water or
dust.
Digital Height Gauge
Notes on storage:
Avoid direct sunlight, high
temperatures, low
temperatures, and high
humidity during storage.
Digital Height Gauge
Do not use the gage outside the
temperature range of 0°C to
40°C. for precision
measurements, the ambient
temperature must be
maintained as close to 20°C as
possible with minimum
fluctuation.
Digital Height Gauge
Absolutely do not apply an
external voltage to the Height
Gage, by such as an electric
engraver.
It may cause a trouble.
Digital Height Gauge
Do not apply excessive force to
the gage.

Carefully handle a height gage

so as not to drop it or bump it
against anything.

Do not disassemble the gage

except to remove
the battery cover when replacing
the battery.
Digital Height Gauge
Do not hold the top of the
column of the gage when
transporting or using it on a
 surface plate. This
could adversely affect the
measuring accuracy.

Digital Height Gauge
To clean the column, base,
 scriber or display panel, wipe it
using a lint-free cloth or paper
towel soaked in alcohol.

Do not use an organic solvent

such as thinner.

Digital Height Gauge
• Be sure to loosen the clamps first
before moving the slider.
• Insert the scriber all the way in the
slider arm as close to the column as
possible so that it does not stick out
more than necessary. Then, tighten
the scriber clamp firmly.
Digital Height Gauge
When pressing switches, hold
the slider with your hand not to
fall the Height gage.
Digital Height Gauge

Like the caliper, and as shown in the following figure,

measurement errors result when using the height gage if the
reference column, which guides the slider, becomes warped.
This error can be represented by the same calculation
formula for errors caused by nonconformance to Abbe's
Principle :
Digital Height Gauge

Installing the scriber (or a lever-type dial indicator) requires

careful consideration because it affects the size of any error
due to a warped reference column by increasing dimension
h in the above formula. In other words, if an optional long
scriber or lever-type dial indicator is used, the measurement
error becomes larger.
Digital Height Gauge
Lifting of the base from the reference surface
When setting the scriber height from a gauge
block stack, or from a workpiece feature, the
base may lift from the surface plate if
excessive downwards force is used on the
slider, and this results in measurement error.

For accurate setting, move the slider slowly downwards

while moving the scriber tip to and fro over the gauge block
surface (or feature). The correct setting is when the scriber
is just felt to lightly touch as it moves over the edge of the
surface.
It is also necessary to make sure that the surface plate and
height gage base reference surface are free of dust or
burrs before use.

PLEASE NOTE
When using the Dial Indicator, make sure measuring
element
(Stylus) is perpendicular to the direction of measurement. If
held at an angle, measurement will not be accurate.
Dial Indicator
• Do not lubricate the spindle.
Doing so might cause dust to
accumulate, resulting in a
malfunction.
• If the spindle movement is
poor, wipe the upper and
lower spindle surfaces with a
dry or alcohol-soaked cloth. If
the movement is not
improved by this cleaning,
contact Standard Room for
repair.
Dial Test Indicator (Puppy Dial)
The reading of any indicator will not
represent an accurate measurement if
its measuring direction is misaligned
with the intended direction of
measurement (cosine effect). Because
the measuring direction of a dial test
indicator is at right angles to a line
drawn through the contact point and
the stylus pivot, this effect can be
minimized by setting the stylus to
minimize angle θ (as shown in the
figures). If necessary, the dial reading
can be compensated for the actual θ
value by using the table below to give
the true measurement.

True measurement = dial reading x

compensation value
Dial Test Indicator (Puppy Dial)
Changing the tip of a DTI
The tip, being a lever, has its length precisely matched to the clockwork inside
the indicator, so that the length of the arc of its extremity's movement has a
known ratio to the gears that drive the dial's needle. Thus to add a longer or
shorter tip requires a correction factor to be multiplied with the dial reading in
order to yield a true distance reading. DTI tips are often threaded for
interchange (like drop indicator tips), with small flats to accept a spanner; but
the intent regarding user-serviceable tip change is limited only to the tips that
originally came with the indicator, because of the above-mentioned
importance of the length. Typically a DTI comes with only a few tips, such as a
small-ball tip and a large-ball tip.
Surface Plate
If a plate is not in use for an extended
period of time, it should be covered with
a surface plate cover.

- Keep the surface clean and free from excess buildup of

dust, dirt, grease, grime or other foreign particles. Using a
dirty surface plate will cause inaccuracies in tool readings
and also cause the plate to wear faster. Clean it daily with
recommended solvent.
Surface Plate

Do not use granite surface plates as workbenches or

lunch tables. Dropping wrenches or hammers on a
granite surface plate can chip or nick the surface. Spilling
Tea or soft drinks on granite will cause a stain, which is
permanent if not cleaned immediately. Food particles will
leave a greasy residue and may also stain the granite.
Surface Plate

- Do not remove support plate of the Surface Plate, It

may affect accuracy of Surface Plate
- Do not move or lift a granite surface plate with a forklift
by placing the metal forks against the granite. Always
have protective padding between the metal forks and
the granite. Preferably, use nylon slings to move it.
Surface Plate

- Set the work piece to be measured on the plate. A

sudden jolt or blow to the plate with a heavy metal
object can damage the surface.
- Use different areas of the surface plate. Inspecting in
the same spot on the surface plate month after month,
year after year, will wear the plate in that spot.
Surface Plate
- Care should be taken not to overload Surface plate.
- Point contact to surface plates is not permissible
- because of local irregularities of the surface.
Contact should be made through either an intermediate
precision gauge block, preferably not more than 10 mm
high, or a similar precision distance
