CIVIL SOCIETY

PERSPECTIVE
Group 3 Presentation
WHAT IS CIVIL SOCIETY PERSPECTIVE?
Civil Society Perspective

 Civilsociety, often referred to as the "third

sector," encompasses people and groups
united by shared goals. Its importance is
explored in this lesson, emphasizing the
role of mobilization in achieving positive
and sustainable change.
Civil Society Perspective

 Civil society embodies the societal

dynamics of a particular era and shapes
communal identity and idealized forms
of participation. It helps address
problems and contributes to the welfare
of the community.
Manifestations of Civil Society
Groups
 Development practitioners are embracing
the emergence of civil society groups,
which are formed based on the customs
and norms of the prevailing society. These
groups act as an intermediary for citizens,
promoting clout and advocating for the
needs of various institutions.
Manifestations of Civil Society
Groups
 Civil society groups are diverse, encompassing
economic, political, cultural, historical, and
religious significance. They can be nonprofit
or for-profit, formal or informal, and differ in
their structure, income source, and advocacy
network.
Role of Society Organizations
 Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a crucial role in liberal
society, forming structures and functions that contribute to the
greater good of society. CSOs operate outside the control of
the state and government, balancing power and engagement
between people, organizations, and the state.

 The strength of social groups depends on the environment that

allows power to flourish, and organizations must balance the
power of institutions, including the state, to ensure their
representation. In a liberal democratic political system, the
state can only do so much, and civil society groups exist in a
more pluralistic manner.
Role of Society Organizations
 Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are structured
and organized with a hierarchy and agreed-upon
codes, norms, and rules for their members. They
represent civil society groups and can lobby for their
interests. NGOs operating on the fringes of the
political system have an advantage as they can see
both sides of the relationship and gain trust from
both institutions. They dictate society’s agendas by
incorporating input from interest groups and
individuals into formal advocacy.
Non-government Organization

 Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are

structured and organized with a hierarchy and
agreed-upon codes, norms, and rules for their
members. They represent civil society groups and
can lobby for their interests. NGOs operating on the
fringes of the political system have an advantage as
they can see both sides of the relationship and gain
trust from both institutions. They dictate society's
agendas by incorporating input from interest groups
and individuals into formal advocacy.
Social Movements
 Social movements are informal groups that exist for a
single purpose or issue and have a short-lived impact.
They exist through the will of their members,
spreading their concerns through flash gatherings and
rallies.
 Social movements have a more direct impact on
society than NGOs, but their strength depends on how
society perceives the norm they propose to alter or
the idea they want to shatter. Their progressive ideas
tend to test the limitations of the state and formal
conventions.
Interest Group

 Interest groups are civil society groups that push for

policy agendas and are formed by interconnected societal
actors. They have a larger scope and social capital than
separate groups and invite formal groups to join them.
Local and international organizations are formed by
citizens, associations, and states. Local government
organizations are state agencies appointed by the
government to carry out their duties for a specified goal,
while international organizations cover global issues like
poverty, malnutrition, and the environment.
