MOVEMENTS
IMPRESSIONISM
• emerged in the second half of the 19th century among a group of Paris-
based artists.
• the duration of impressionist movement itself was quite short, less than 20
years from 1872 to mid 1880s.
• it had a tremendous impact and influence on painting styles that followed
such as neo-impressionism, post impressionism fauvism and cubism and
even the artistic styles and movements of today.
• first revolutionary art movement that echoed the abstract style of painting
• The name Impressionism was coined from the title of a work by French
painter Claude Monet

Principles of Art
• Balance-the distribution of the visual weight of object, colors,
textures and space
• Contrast-a technique of using unlike visual elements to create
contrast like shadows to highlight important information
• Movement-the use of visual techniques ,such as color, line, shape and
composition to create an illusion of motion
• Pattern- repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art
• Rhythm-the movement within a piece of art that helps the eye travel
through to a point of focus
