Location

• Here are some pictures with the location of

Southern Italy, it is between the Ionian Sea
and the Tyrrhenian sea.
Life and customs of the Grecanic villages

• Their daily lifes are very similar to ours and whatever they do they try
• to have something Greek in it for them to remember their mother
• Greece us they say. They speak a local dialect, known as Griko. Other
• communities in Southern Italy also speak dialects very common to
• ancient Greek. They love Greece and they try to have it in their lifes
• as much as they can.

• Greek people have been living in Southern Italy,they are found

• principally in regions of Calabria and Apulia. Simple daily chores, such
• as going to the fountain with a jug for water or washing clothes at the
• outdoor, communal laundry area were focal points of social
• interaction.
History
• - 8 th century BC many colonies were created in Sicily and
• Southern Italy, Magna Grecia.
• - The Greeks tried to grecianize the locals and they transmitted
• their civilization, their traditions, their language and their
• religion.
• - The Hellenism was so totalitarian that most of the enemies that
• tried to conquer it, were defeated.
• - The main colonies that were created in Southern Italy are:
• Cumae, Sybaris, Croton and Taras and Sybaris was the richest.
• - The main colonies that were created in Sicily are:
• Syracuse, Gela, Selinous and Akragas and the richest was
• Syracuse.

Language

• Griko, sometimes spelled Grico,

is the dialect of Italien Greek
language spoken by Griko people
in Salento (province of Lecce),
and called Grecanico, in Calabria.
Some Greek linguists
(γλωσσολόγοι) consider it to be
a Modern Greek dialect and
often call it Katoitaliótika or
Grekanika (Greek).
