WHAT IS A LCD

• LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display

• It consists of very tiny liquid crystals that can range from a few nanometers to a
few micrometers

• These do not emit any light of their own, they are backlit by LEDs or CCFL
(cold cathode fluorescent lamp)

• There is a difference between LCD and LED screens, LED screens consist of
nothing but LEDS while LCD screens are backlit by LEDS (CCFL is
inefficient)
LED VS CCFL

• LED is very efficient converting up to 40-50% • CCFL’s aren’t very efficient as they produce a
energy to light and the rest is mostly heat energy lot more heat
• They have a yellow tint which can reduce
• In LCD there are millions of LEDs present quality
• They are very bright so color definition is very • They consume much more energy than LEDS
good. Gives out a white light to enhance quality
• They take time to reach maximum output
• Very low power consumption
• They last incredibly long so they don’t have to be • They are bigger than LEDS so not used for
replaced often screens a lot

• Go from unlit to lit almost instantly so you don’t • In LCD’s two are used to backlight it
have to wait for it to reach max brightness
OLED

• OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode

• These are made with carbon compounds, the ones made with polymers are
known as p-OLED
• Usually consist of a layer of glass/plastic, then a metal cathode (-) an
emissive layer (to enhance efficiency) a conductive layer (usually made of
organic plastic molecules) a glass anode and another layer of glass/plastic
• The significant difference between these and regular LED’s is the fact that
these can be bent, meaning curved screens can be made rather than flat ones
