Introduction
• The kinetic study of the hydrolysis of methyl acetate
with hydrochloric acid involves investigating the rate
at which reaction occurs. The reaction follows a
psedo-first order kinetics, Where the rate of reaction
is proportional to the concentration of methyl
acetate.
Formula of methyl acetate

• The molecular or chemical formula of methyl acetate is

C3H6O2
Properties of methyl acetate:

• It is a clear, colourless liquid that has a tepical ester odour

similar to glues and nail polish removers. It is very
flammable with a flash point -10 °C . And flammability
rating of methyl acetate is commonly used in low toxicity
solvents such as glues and nail polish removers.
Importance of methyl acetate

• Methyl acetate is a volatile solvent. It is used in fast-drying

paints and for the manufacture of celluloid adhesives from
waste film .

• Methyl acetate is often used in lacquer solution to lower the

viscosity, methyl acetate may also be used in perfumery and
in dye manufacture.
Methyl acetate found:
• It is commonly found in Apple and various other fruits such
as banana and grapes.

• As it is an ester it can be synthesized in an esterfication

reaction by reacting acetic acid with methanol in the presence
of sulfuric acid.
Factors affecting
• Concentration of reactant.
• Temperature.
• Catalyst.
• Solvent.
• PH.
Solubility of methyl acetate

• Methyl acetate has a solubility of 25% in water at room

temperature.

At elevated temperature its solubility in water is much higher.

Methyl acetate is not stable in the presence of strong aqueous
bases or aqueous acids.
Hydrolysis reaction of methyl acetate:

• The methyl acetate hydrolysis reaction is a reversible

reaction in which the chemical equilibrium constant is small
and and the reaction rate is fast. Which indicates that the
reaction equilibrium is easily established.
• The reaction is endothermic reaction.so high temperature
facilitate chemical equilibrium to forward direction.
Reaction and calculation:
• CH3COOCH3 + H2O= CH3COOH + CH3OH
(HCI)
• R = K [CH3COOCH3]ⓐ [H2O]ⓑ [HCI]ⓒ

• Pseduo first order

• R=K[CH3COOCH3]
• T(1/2)= 0.693 / K

• K = (2.303/K)log(V&-V°/V&-Vt)

• Log(V&-Vt)=log(V&-V°) – (K/2.303)
Role of HCI in hydrolysis of methyl
acetate:
• HCI is a pusedo first order reaction.

• HCI acts as a catalyst for the hydrolysis.

• HCI is evaporative , it can also be used to recover the

hydrolysate in smaller amount of buffer.a feature that is
particularly useful for small amount of sample.
