Bridging the Digital Divide

for Senior Citizens

A comparative analysis of libraries across the
United States.

Capstone Project by: Alisha Short

Introduction
This project involves exploring strategies for bridging the digital divide for senior citizens in
twenty-one libraries across the United States. The research includes selecting four libraries
from each of the five regions of the United States (Northeast, Southeast, West, Southwest,
Midwest) and exploring their digital initiatives regarding senior citizens. I also conducted
research on my local library for comparison. This research includes understanding how these
libraries address the digital needs of seniors, outreach to nursing homes and assisted living
facilities, and the implementation of assistive technologies.

The latest demographic data from data.census.gov was analyzed to identify states within
each region with the largest senior population. The four states with the highest senior
population in each region were chosen for further investigation. Libraries within each
chosen state were selected by opting for one of the top choices displayed on the Google
results page.
Research Questions
• How do libraries across the United States address the digital needs of
senior citizens, and what has proven to be most effective in bridging the
digital divide for this group?

• What methods are employed by libraries to engage senior citizens,

including those in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and how
effective are these approaches in promoting digital skills and access to
technology?

• What types of assistive technologies are implemented in libraries to

enhance accessibility for senior citizens, and how do these technologies
contribute to bridging the digital divide for this group?

Summary
• Libraries across the United States address the digital needs of senior citizens through various strategies including one-
on-one assistance, tech classes and workshops, digital resources, and community outreach initiatives. Based on my
research, the most effective strategy in bridging the digital divide for senior citizens appears to be one-on-one
assistance. This approach allows for personalized support and guidance, addressing the needs of each individual.
• Libraries employ various methods to engage senior citizens, including those in nursing homes and assisted living
facilities through on-site visits, mobile services, partnerships, and personalized outreach and assistance. These
approaches effectively promote digital skills and technology access for senior citizens, including those in nursing
homes and assisted living facilities. Libraries directly offer personalized assistance to help seniors overcome digital
literacy barriers.
• Libraries implement various assistive technologies to enhance accessibility for senior citizens including screen readers
and magnifiers, adaptive keyboards and devices, assistive listening devices, and accessible workstations. Assistive
technologies play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide for senior citizens by overcoming hurdles to accessing
library resources and services. With adaptable tools and devices, libraries can meet the diverse needs of patrons and
empower seniors to engage with technology and effectively utilize digital content.
