LESSON 2: POWER PROBLEMS
(PROTECTING AGAINST POWER
PROBLEMS)
INTRODUCTI
In ths lesson,
ON
- You will be aware of the different power
problems encountered in using electrical
devices (ex: Computer)
- Identify the different tools or
equipments used to prevent power
problems
POWER
PROBLEMS
1. SAGS
You can enter a subtitle here if you need it
SAGS
- Also known as brownouts, sags are
short-term decrease in voltage levels.
This is the most common power problem,
accounting o 87% of all power
disturbances according to a study by Bell
Labs.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF
SAGS IN OUR COMPUTER?
A Sag can “starve” a computer of the
power it needs to function, and cause
frozen keyboards and unexpected
system crashes which both results to
lost or corrupted data.

2. BLACKOUT
You can enter a subtitle here if you need it
BLACKOUT
- TOTAL LOSS OF UTILITY POWER
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF
BLACKOUT IN OUR
COMPUTER?
Operating systems are complex and must go
through a "shutdown sequence" to ensure all
running processes have correctly terminated
before powering off. A sudden loss of electricity
will interrupt this sequence and may leave
processes "half-finished," which can corrupt
files and threads, damaging the operating
system
SPIKE or
SURGES
-

-
Also referred to as an impulse, is an
instantaneous, dramatic increase in
voltage.
Typically caused by a nearby
lightning strike
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF
SPIKES IN OUR COMPUTER?
- CATASTROPHIC
DAMAGE TO HARDWARE
OCCURS. DATA WILL BE
LOST.

S
SURGE
PROTECTOR
- Surge protectors are
inexpensive devices that filter
electrical power to eliminate
surges or spikes before they get
to your equipments
AVR
- Maintains a constant
voltage level to the
electrical equipment’s.
- It is also used as protection
for surges or spikes
UPS
- A device that allows a
computer to keep running
for at least a short time
depends on the voltage
capability of the UPS.
EMERGENCY POWER
GENERATION EQUIPMENT
- A step up from UPS is
EPGE. Such equipment is
usually powered by
Gasoline or Diesel fuel,
and can provide power for
extended periods.
