❖ It was only during the second half of the 19th

century, his ideas were accepted.
❖ Despite completing a degree in ecclesiastical
law in 1796, he soon developed a strong
interest in physics and mathematics.
❖ He later fathered six children with wife Felicita
Mazze.

❖ Eventually, Avogadro started a career as a

The Legacy of Count Avogadro: The Mole

Avogadro's work involved determining the relative masses of elementary molecules in bodies and the
proportions in which they combine in compounds.

He emphasized the simple relationships between the volumes of gaseous substances and the numbers
of molecules forming them, proposing that the number of integral molecules in gases is proportional
to their volumes.

Avogadro corrected Dalton's errors showing how molecules combine differently. His insights
demonstrated his clarity in determining molecular masses of compounds based on gas volumes and
compositions.

This led to the development of the mole in 1811 as a quantifiable amount of a substance as well as
Avogadro’s constant that is widely used to calculate moles.

gathered, his ideas gained acceptance.

❖ A set of methods: Avogadro primarily

used deduction/deductive reasoning to
come up with his hypothesis.

❖ Tentativeness: Made observations on the

behavior of gases while studying works of
Gay-Lussac and Dalton.

Reflection Assessment

At the time of it’s conception, Avogadro’s law was met with skepticism and was not widely
accepted. What feelings may have led him to continue his work and what can you as an
individual internalize from the success of his work and transfer to your life?
