LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Identify types of qualitative research designs

Understand the principles and characteristics of each

design
GUIDE CARD 1

Qualitative research designs refer to systematic plans

or frameworks that guide the collection, analysis, and
interpretation of qualitative data. Qualitative research
is concerned with exploring and understanding the
complexities of human experiences, behaviors, and
phenomena in their natural contexts.

Com m on qua l i t a t i ve re se a r c h de s i gns i nc l ude :

Phenomenological research: Focuses on understanding the lived

experiences of individuals or groups and uncovering the essence or
meaning of those experiences.

Ethnographic research: Involves immersive observation and interaction

within a cultural or social group to understand their behaviors,
practices, and beliefs within their natural context.
GUIDE CARD 2

Grounded theory: Aims to develop theoretical frameworks or

explanations grounded in the data collected, often through iterative
cycles of data collection, coding, and analysis.

Case study: In-depth examination of a single individual, group,

organization, or phenomenon to explore complex interactions and
contextual factors.
GUIDE CARD 3

These designs are not mutually exclusive, and researchers may

combine elements from different approaches to suit their research
objectives and the nature of the phenomenon under investigation.
Additionally, qualitative research designs prioritize the use of
various data collection techniques such as interviews, focus
groups, observations, and document analysis to gather rich and
detailed insights into the research topic.
