BUILDING

O F
• The building layout took some time to decide upon.

M I D R I S E
We initially planned a 10m span building however,
the problem with that was that of transportation.

P R E FA B
• We tried to favor the solid slab, by deigning a 5m

B U
span. As well as using yield line analysis to insure
the most optimum cast in-situ design.
INTRODUCTION 3

• We have used isolated foundation since our studies

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
have practically shown the building in Piassa
(NibRas) has isolated footing.

• Isolated footing was also preferred because of

transportation issues.

• Initially Slab has a load of 6.76KN/m2.

P R E FA B
• The monolithically cast beam under the slab was
designed using (online beam calculator). The beam

B U
calculator was checked using the moment
WA F F L E distribution method on an excel sheet. 9
SLAB • After adding the beams load to the slab, we get

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
8.7KN/m2, which is less than the Cast-in-situ’s
10.87KN/m2

• The slab to beam connection since it is not

M I D R I S E
monolithically cast requires one of the connections
mentioned in the beginning of this presentation.

P R E FA B
• The dowel bars or bolts can be extended to overlap
in the interior spans to create a continuous slab

layout if needed
CONNECTIO 10
• The dowel bars will be mostly subjected to shear
N

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
force and that is what we shall be analyzing

• For each slab we have 20 dowel bars Hence each

dowel bar has to carry a shear force of 10KN but
with only 40% capacity it will be 25KN resulting in
a 14mm bar.

M I D R I S E
• Since the beam to column connection is not

P R E FA B
monolithically cast, it requires one of the connections
mentioned at the beginning of this persentation.
BEAM

B U
• We have decided in using dowel bars as we have done

CONNECTIO for the slab to beam connection 11

• We need to have more than 1 dowel bar per connection

N

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
to avoid rotation.

• Therefore we ended up having 4*16mm connection on

each end of a beam

• The column shoes are not actually designed by us as

O F
we do not design the rebars but rather choose from

M I D R I S E
specified types.

• The common practice is to take a supplier, see their

P R E FA B
product catalog, and choose what suits us
COLUMN-

• The same rules apply to bolts used with the shoes,
TO-COLUMN which are sold in standard length and dimensions. 12

• Load transfer on the bottom of 4th floor in column =

1505KN. 4* PEC 36 shoe (4* 436KN)

• Load transfer on the to foundation = 2150KN,

4*PEC 45 shoe (4*697KN)

• We have used revit extensively to calculate the
amount of rebar and volume of concrete found in the

P R E FA B
slab
D ATA

B U
• As the table below shows a grand total of
A N A LY S I S 3,018.97m3 and 1,785.29m3 concrete volume for
13
the cast insitu and precast concrete respectively
AND

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
• We must remember that this design was conducted
R E S U LT S
in favorable conditions for the cast-in-situ in pre-cast
favoring situations this gap will be significantly
larger
I L D I N G
D E S I G N
• According to what we have discovered in

O F
viewing ECWC the time taken to produce

M I D R I S E
one slab is less than 24 hours

P R E FA B
• We recommend the development of the
precast industry in Ethiopia as well as the

B U
academics sector in Ethiopia

CONCLUSION • Considering the drastic shortage of cement 15

and rebar in the country this will be

0 4 / 1 7 / 2 0 2 4
fundamentally important in the economic
development

• Using 5000 Birr/m3 for concrete and

120Birr/Kg of rebar we save 6,168,400ETB
and 20,169,218.9ETB respectively.
