Capsicum Frutescens In Eliminating Mosquitoes CO-RESEARCHERS: Ms. ANGEL ROSE A. SINGSON Ms. ANGELI JUSTINIANE Ms. LIZA MAE BRIONES Ms. GERELYN FRANCISCO Ms. MARIA KARYLLE AUTENTICO Ms. GLENSON BONIEL Ms. ARWIN AVENIDO Rationale: Mosquito-borne diseases pose significant health risks, particularly in the Philippines. Traditional methods often rely on chemical insecticides, which can have negative environmental effects and lead to insecticide resistance. This study aims to explore the potential of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens as natural mosquito repellents. Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens have shown potential as natural mosquito repellents. Cymbopogon citratus contains citronella, a volatile oil, and Capsicum frutescens, specifically capsaicin, has been found to deter pests. The research aims to determine the efficacy of these natural repellents, contributing to the development of eco-friendly and sustainable mosquito control strategies. This research has the potential to positively impact public health, particularly in regions heavily affected by mosquito-borne diseases. RESEARCH QUESTION How do the chemicals compositions of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts differ and how do these differences influence their effectiveness in eliminating mosquitoes? Whatis the comparative effectiveness of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts in eliminating mosquitoes, considering factors such as repellent potency ,duration of efficacy and environmental effect? What are the potential mechanisms of action by which Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts in eliminating mosquitoes? GOALS To identify the key chemical of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts to understand their potential mechanisms of action against mosquitoes. Todetermine which natural extract, Cymbopogon citratus or capsicum frutescens, is more effective in getting rid of mosquitoes based on factors such as repellent potency and duration of efficacy. Toevaluate the underlying mechanisms by which Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts eliminate mosquitoes to provide insight into their mode of action. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Insights into the potential use efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts in eliminating mosquitoes. Comparing the efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens extracts is evidently show stronger repellent potency and long-lasting efficacy against mosquitoes. HYPOTHESIS Theoccurrence of Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens in a given area positively correlates with their effectiveness in eliminating insects, due to their inherent properties. Repellingplants like Cymbopogon citratus and Capsicum frutescens deter insects such as mosquitoes from a specific area, while eliminating them reduces their overall population. Capsicumfrutescens is more effective in eliminating mosquitoes due to its stronger active compounds compared to Cymbopogon citratus. RESEARCH DESIGN The research study is experimental and shall be conducted so as to determine the larvicidal effect of Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) and Capsicum frutescens (Chili Powder). Two various controls will be used, classified as: the experimental group [50mL crude extract of Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) and a 50% concentration of Capsicum frutescens (Chili Powder)], and the negative control (50mL distilled water).
