The Human Person is
Free and Responsible
How can you become
authentically free and
responsible?
A Freedom Story in the Gospel (Luke 19:1-10)
He came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there
named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was
seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for
he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climed a sycamore tree in order to
see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus
looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay
at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When
they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the
house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half
of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything
from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today
salvation has come to this house because this man too is decent of Abraham. For
the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”
•The story of Zacchaeus shows a
journey of a person who used
human freedom in selfish ways
towards selfless ways. He has
change of heart all because of Jesus
Christ Himself.
UNDERSTANDING
DEEPER THE
HUMAN FREEDOM
• When God created men and women, He
gave them intellect and free will.
• This free will or freedom must be
understood well in order to avoid any abuses
of its use and to use it to the fullest to be true
to our identity as the highest creation of
God, vreated in His own divine image and
likeness.
Authentic Freedom
• it is not “the right to say or do anything,” but to “do
the good”. Human freedom cannot be simply reduced
to “doing what I want.” We are most free when we do
well.
• it is not my own individual private possession, but a
shared freedom with others in the community.
• a give-and-take kind of relationship is demanded of
shared freedom.
TWO MAIN ASPECTS OF
FREEDOM
•Freedom from
•Freedom for
Freedom From
• Human persons must be free from interior and exterior
obstacles that hinder us from becoming the person we are
according to the image and likeness of God.
• Interior obstacle include ignorance, our disordered
passions, fears, personality defects, bad habits, prejudices,
and psychological diturbances.
• Exterior obstacles include violence or any threat of
violence. But the greatest single obstacle to authentic
freedom is sin.
