• Air Pollution
• What is Air Pollutants ?
• Classification : Primary
Secondary
AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollution is the presence of substances in the atmosphere that are harmful to the health of humans
and other living beings, or cause damage to the climate or to materials.
WHAT IS AIR POLLUTANT ?

• Air pollutant is a material in the air that can have adverse effects on humans and the ecosystem
• The substance can be solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases.
• A pollutant can be of natural origin or man-made. Pollutants are classified as primary or secondary.
• Pollutants are the substances which cause pollution; air pollution is caused by air pollutants.

• There are many different types of air pollutants, such as gases (ammonia, carbon monoxide, sulphur
dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane, carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons.)

• Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to human, it may also cause harm to other
living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the natural environment

• For example, climate change, ozone depletion or habitat degradation) or built environment (acid rain).
Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution.
CLASSIFICATION OF AIR POLLUTANTS

The two types of air pollutants are primary pollutants , which enter the atmosphere directly and secondary
pollutants , which from chemical reaction.

 Primary pollutants:
1. The pollutants that are emitted directly from identifiable sources produced by natural events and
human activities are called primary pollutants.

2. Five major materials released directly into the atmosphere in unmodified forms.
-Carbon monoxide
-Sulfur dioxide
-Nitrogen oxides
-Hydrocarbons
-Particulate matter
 Secondary pollutants:
1. The pollutants that are formed in the atmosphere by chemical interactions between primary
pollutants and atmospheric constituents are known as secondary pollutants.
2. --Ozone
--PAN (peroxy acetyl nitrate)
--Photochemical smog
--Aerosols and mists (H2SO4)
