Football games are played on a rectangular field that measures 120
yards (110 m) long and 53´33 yards (48.8 m) wide. Lines marked
along the ends and sides of the field are known as the end lines and
sidelines. Goal lines are marked 10 yards (9.1 m) inward from each
end line.

Duration of the match:

Football games last for a total of 60 minutes and are divided


into four quarters of 15 minutes.

After the second quarter there is a halftime period, and the first
and third quarters are followed by a short break.

Equipment:

Players must wear a football helmet


and a set of shoulder pads at least.

Players:
A football game is played between two teams of 11 players each.
The 11 offensive players are different from the defensive players.

Teams may substitute any number of their players between downs.

Each team has offensive units, defensive units and special team
units.

The role of the offensive unit is to advance the football down


the field with the ultimate goal of scoring a touchdown.

The quarterback is the player that controls the game in each


attack.

by tackling the ball carrier or by forcing turnovers.

Special units are responsible for all kicking plays.

Scoring:

Touchdown:

The touchdown (6 points) is the most valuable scoring play in American


football. A touchdown is scored when a ball is advanced into, caught in, or
recovered in the opposing team's end zone.

After the touchdown, the scoring team then attempts a conversion, worth 1 or 2
points.

Field goal:

The field goal (3 points) is scored when the ball is placekicked


through the uprights and over the crossbars of the defense's
goalposts.

Safety:

A safety (2 points) is scored when the ball carrier is tackled in


their own end zone. Safeties are worth two points, which are
awarded to the defense.

Game:

The offense is given a series of 4 plays, known as “downs”.

• If the offense advances 10 or more yards in the 4 downs,


they are awarded a new set of 4 downs.

• If they fail to advance 10 yards, possession of the football is


turned over to the defense.

Game:

In a typical play, the center passes the ball backwards and between their legs to
the quarterback. Then, the quarterback can:

• Hand the ball off to a running back.

• Pass the ball to a partner.

• Run with the ball.

After the first pass, the players can pass the ball between them, but always
laterally or backwards.

Referees:

Officials are responsible for enforcing game rules and monitoring the
clock. There is a total of 8 officials (1 referee and 7 officials).

All officials carry a whistle and wear black-and-white striped shirts and
black hats except for the referee, whose hat is white.

Duration of the match:

• Professional matches are best-of-five sets.

• The first team to score 25 points by a two-point margin win


the set.

• The fifth set, if necessary, is usually played to 15 points


(also by a two-point margin).

• A point is scored when the ball contacts the floor within


the court boundaries or when an error is made.

Gameplay:

• Teams must use a combination of no more than three contacts


with the ball to return it to the opponent's side of the net.

• Players can block opposite spikes.

• Blocking the ball doesn´t count as a touch.

• Touching the net with any part of the body.

• The same player touching the ball twice in a row.

• Holding or spending too much time while passing the


ball.

• Blocking the serve.

• Taking more than 8 seconds to serve.

• Touching the ball more than 3 times before returning


it to the opponent's side of the net (blocking the ball
doesn´t count as a touch).

• Stepping the opponent's side of the court.

• Setters have the task for orchestrating the offence of the team.

• Liberos are defensive players who are responsible for receiving


the attack or serve. They can´t play in the front line (near the net).

Rotation:

• If the team that won the point served in


the previous point, the same player
serves again.

• If the team that won the point did not


serve the previous point, the players of
the team acquiring the serve rotate their
position on the court in a clockwise
manner.
