table, in groups of 3, label the
bones you know in the body on
one of the members of your
group.
Structure of the skeletal system
• There are 24 bones in the body that you must know.

• 5 of these bones are in the vertebral column that we will learn later.

• Using the handout, label as many of the bones that you can.

• The next slide has the 19 that you will need to label…… But first… have
a go on your own and then compare with those around you.

• The vertebral column (spine)
is made up of 5 parts.
• The vertebral column is made
up of 33 bones.
• Cervical (7)
• Thoracic (12)
• Lumbar (5)
• Sacrum (5 Fused)
• Coccyx (4 Fused)

• Revision Tip: To help remember the 5 parts of the
vertebral column, use the following acronym!
• Chatham – Cervical
• Town – Thoracic
• Ladies - Lumbar
• Sell - Sacrum
• Cake - Coccyx
