GEOTHERMAL

ENERGY
with teacher Shane
what is geothermal
Energy?
is the energy derived from the center of the earth.
The heat is captured and harnessed for electrical
power generation.
what is geothermal
Energy?
Geothermal comes from the greek word “geo”,
which means Earth and “thermal”, which means
heat.
PACIFIC
RING OF
FIRE
it is also known as Circum Pacific Belt. It is
where 75% of the world’s active volcano. It
is a major area where most frequent
volcanic activities and earthquakes occur
In conventional Geothermal energy, steam from
natural resources such as geysers or high pressure
depths are used to drive electric turbines whereas in
volcanic geothermal energy, the scientist and
researchers are using the heat from supercritical
water.

advantages and
disadvantages of geothermal
energy
advantages of geothermal
energy
• More environment friendly than coal
and fossil fuels resources
• A renewable resource
• No fuel required
• Rapid evolution(more improvements
are done to mitigate its disadvantages)
disadvantages of geothermal
energy
• May trigger earthquakes (a result of digging)
• Located - restricted (power plants must be built where
geothermal energy is accessible )
• Environmental concerns about greenhouse emissions
• High investment cost for geothermal systems
• Building of geothermal power plants may affect the
stability of a land
