above items must be under 200,000 YEN
• Any item whose total overseas market value does not exceed
10,000 YEN is always free of duties and/or taxes and is not
counted in the calculation of the total overseas market value of

• There is no duty-free allowance for articles or sets of articles that
have a market value of more than 200,000 YEN each or per set

1. Microchips implantation: For identification before rabies vaccination

2. Rabies vaccination: Two vaccinations within the effective interval with the second
shot administratered no more than one year before import

3. Blood test: Check rabies antibody level

4. Advance Notification: Notify the Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) of Japan
no later than 40 days before arrival.

5. Waiting Period: Stay in the exporting country for at least 180 days but no
more than two years before entering Japan.

ARRIVAL
1. Quarantine: A 12-hour quarantine if all requirements are met.

2. Documentation: Submit the following documents to the AQS:


⚬ International Health Certificate
⚬ Two Rabies Vaccination Certificates
⚬ Advanced Notification Acknowledgement from the AQS
⚬ Import Quarantine Application Form (provided by the AQS)
Without these documents the quarantine can be 180 days

The articles below are prohibited by law


1. Heroin, cocaine, MDMA, opium, 2. Firearms (pistols, etc.), ammunition
cannabis, stimulants, psychotropic (bullets) thereof, and pistol parts; explosives
substances, and other narcotic drugs (dynamite, gunpowder, etc.) and materials
for chemical weapons.
