Outcomes of this lecture

• Analyse different teaching and learning approaches;

• Be able to identify the different learning styles of
students;
• Apply different instructional approaches to accommodate
students’ different learning styles;
• Compare the different instructional approaches to determine
the appropriate level of instruction;
Learning theories
• It is the internal and external influences that influences that explain
the different ways in which people learn
• Learning theories help you to understand how your students learn
• Your own learning theory shapes your teaching and learning
approach in the classroom
• Understand your students’ learning styles to adapt your teaching to
the different learning styles
Instructional approaches
• Understand your students’ learning styles to adapt your teaching to the
different learning styles
• 3 Main types:
 Teacher-centered
 Student-centered
Learning-centered
Blended-learning approach
• Initially it was teacher-centered, then it shifted to student-centered, and
now the focus is on a learning-centered approach to teaching and learning

3. Reading/Writing
4. Kinesthetics
5. (Multimodal)
Why is it important to understand the
different learning styles
• By understanding your students’ learning styles, you as a facilitator can assist the students in
the following manner:
• Assist in developing additional learning skills
• Improve their learning strategies
• You can also assist them to understand how they:
• Take in information
• Use information for effective learning
• Communicate more effectively
• Can perform well in tests and examinations
1. Visual learner
• These students prefer to see the work they need to study
• To perform well they should:
• Draw things and use diagrams when studying
• Recall the pictures that you’ve made in your summaries
• Practice by turning your visuals back into words
• Study by using flow charts, mind maps, symbols, underling things in different colours
• Search for videos/visual presentations of the work that they don’t understand
2. Auditory
• These students have strong preference for learning by auditory skills.
• To perform well they should:
• Attend lectures regularly
• Discuss topics with other and listen to other students’ feedback
• Explain new ideas to others
• Use a voice recorder when studying and reply your work to yourself
• Read your summarised notes out loud
• Recall your ideas/work out loud
• Ask questions if you don’t understand
3. Reading/writing
• These students have a strong preference for learning by reading and writing
• To perform well they should:
• Make lists and summarise their work in writing
• They should read their work over and over
• Rewrite ideas and principles into other words to make sure that they understand their work
• Organise diagrams and graphs into statements
• Arrange your work in hierarchies and points
4. Kinesthetics
• These students have a preference to move and/or experience learning by utilising all their
senses
• To perform well they should:
• Use most of their senses when learning
• Sit on a gym ball when studying
• Look for real-life examples
• Go on field trips where possible
• Connect your theory to real life examples, by putting examples in your summaries
• Move around when your study
• Role play your work
5. Multimodal
• These students have preferences for multiple study strategies
• They can use a combination of the abovementioned learning styles which is applicable to
them
Preparation for next week
• Choose your instructional approach and two learning styles and explain how you will
accommodate students in your facilitation class by utilising your chosen instructional
approach
