Analyzing Photosynthesis

Lab
Directions:
1. Take out your notebooks and label a blank sheet of
paper with the title “Analyzing Photosynthesis Lab”,
Date, and Name.
2. Wait for further directions.
Procedure: WRITE THIS IN YOUR LAB!
• Put on disposable gloves and safety goggles.
• Obtain (3) 250 Erlenmeyer Flasks and label them with your group
name, hour, and flasks “1”, “2”, “3”.
• Measure (2) 5cm sprigs of Elodea
• Add 200 mL of water and 20 drops bromothymol blue to each flask.
• Put the drinking straw in flask 1 and blow into the blue solution until
the solution turns yellow. Repeat this step with flask 2.
• Put one Elodea sprig in flask 1. Do nothing to flask 2. Put the other
Elodea sprig in flask 3.
• Cover all flasks with a plastic sandwich bag and tie with a rubber
band.
• Place flasks under lights.

• Explain what caused one of the solutions to change color.
• Why did the other solutions not change colors?
• Which flask is the control in this experiment?
• Describe possible sources of error.

Clean up: Rinse your flasks out in the sink and place on
back lab counter to dry.
