Need Of Electric vehicle
 With current rate oil production and consumption, the oil reserves on the earth will not last for
more then 50 years
 Fast depletion of crude oil reserves
 Increasing oil crude prices
 High pollution due to vehicle
 Increasing the overall cost of vehicle due to pollution norms
Types of electric vehicle

 Battery electric vehicle (BEVs)

 Hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs)

1)Battery electric vehicle
 (BEVs) Or Electric Vehicle Is An Automobile Propelled By One Or More Electric Motor Using
The Energy Stored In Rechargeable Battery
 (BEVs) Powered Only By Rechargeable Battery And There Is No I.C Engine
Element of battery electric vehicle(BEVs)
 Charger
 Rechargeable Battery
 Drive control
 Invertor
 Electric motor
 Transmission unit
Advantages of battery electric vehicle (BEVs)
1) No air pollution
2) Less noise
3) Simple in design
4) Rapid acceleration
5) Low running cost
6) Low maintenance cost

Limitations of battery electric vehicle

(BEVs )
1) Limited travelling range

2) Short battery life

3) Low speed

4) Non-availability of network of charging station

2)Hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs)

 Hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs) is propelled by two power sources

1) Electric motor by rechargeable battery
2) I.C engine
 Hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs) is progressive transformation from conventional automobile
vehicle powered by only I.C engine to battery electric vehicle powered by only electric motor
 Hybrid electric vehicle minimizes the drawback of conventional I.C engine power automobile
vehicle and retains the advantages to conventional I.C engine powered automobile vehicle
Classification of hybrid electric
vehicle(HEVs)
1) Classification based on the Architecture
2) Classification based on the degree of hybridization
3) Classification based on the Nature of power source
1) Classification based on the Architecture

 Further classification of the architecture of (HEVs)

1.1) series hybrid vehicle

1.2) parallel hybrid vehicle
1.3) series – parallel hybrid vehicle
1.1)series hybrid vehicle
 Electric motor is the only means of providing the power to the wheel through transmission unit
(gear box)
 Electric motor receives electric power from either
 rechargeable battery or
 Generator run by I.C engine
 The computer assist drive control unit decide the quality of power to come from the battery and
the I.C engine generator
1.2)parallel hybrid vehicle
 I.C engine as well as electric motor drives the wheel through the transmission system
 When power demand is low the electric motor acts as generator and act as generator and utilizes
the excess power from I.C engine to charge battery in addition during braking also the electric
motor acts as a generator uses the regenerative braking energy to charge battery
1.3)series-parallel electric vehicle (S-P ev)
 In s-p I.C engine is use to drive the wheel through transmission unit and charge the battery
 S-p have complicated architecture
2) Classification bases on degree of
hybridization
 Degree of hybridization = electrical motor power

Electric motor power + I.C engine power

1)micro-hybrid vehicle = If degree of hybridization is upto 5%

2)Mild-hybrid electric vehicle = If degree of hybridization is between 5% & 10%
3)full-hybrid vehicle = If degree of hybridization is greater then 10%
4)full-electric vehicle = If degree of hybridization is 100%
3) Classification bases on natural power
source
1) battery hybrid electric vehicle =uses battery to power the electric motor
2) fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle =uses fuel cell powered by hydrogen to run electric motor
Advantages of hybrid vehicle
1)Large travelling range
2)Regenerative braking
3)Combined advantages of conventional vehicle and electric vehicle

Limitation of hybrid electric vehicle

1)High initial cost

2) Short battery life
Power split device (PSD)
 The power split device is an epicyclic gear train that integrates that I.C engine and electric motor
drive together
 Power split device allows the vehicle to be driven by:
1) I.C engine or
2) Electric motor
3) Combination of I.C engine and electric motor

Component of power split device

1) Sun gear =connected to the generator
2) Planetary carrier =connected to I.C engine
3) Ring gear =connected to the electric motor & differential
4) Pinion gear=mounted on planetary carrier
Types of power split
1. Simple power split device = consist of single epicyclic gear box
Consist of parts
1) Sun gear =connected to the generator
2) Planetary carrier =connected to I.C engine
3) Ring gear =connected to the electric motor & differential
4) Pinion gear=mounted on planetary carrier
2)Compound power split device =consist of
1)two planetary gears
2)one electric continually variable transmission
Components of series hybrid electric vehicles

1) Battery of charger
2) Drive control unit
3) Inverter
4) Electric motor
5) I.C engine
6) Generator
7) Transmission unit (gear box)
Component of parallel hybrid electric vehicles

1) I.C engine
2) Battery
3) Invertor
4) Electric motor
5) Drive control unit
6) Transmission unit (gear box)
Modes of operation of hybrid electric vehicle
1. Charge depletion (CD) mode
2. Charge sustaining (CS) mode

 CD=after a full recharge of battery the vehicle is mainly driven by electric motor till the state of
charge (SOC)of battery reaches the low threshold
thus the operating mode in which vehicle is mainly driven by electric motor is called as charge
depletion mode
 CS=after SOC of battery reaches the minimum sustainable or low threshold level the vehicle is
mainly driven by IC engine and an electric motor provides auxiliary power
thus the operating mode in which vehicle is mainly driven by an I.C
Engine is called charge sustaining(CS) mode
