ELEMENTS
SCIENCE
Nearly all of the elements that make up
the matter in our universe, including the Earth
and our cells are created in the interiors of
stars. The early universe contained little more
than hydrogen and helium, the elements with
the smallest nuclei. The tremendous heat and
pressure inside massive stars continuously
forces together a new combination of protons,
neutrons and electrons; creating heavier
elements with larger nuclei. When stars
explode or become supernovae, the pressure
from the blast enables even heavier elements
to be formed and all are scattered into the
cosmos. Astronomers identify different types
of supernovae by the spectrum of their
elements. The spectrum is represented as a
graph. Each dip in the graph identifies a
different element bursting out of the
explosion. Once released, newly formed
elements participate in the formation of new
stars and planets. The nuclei of our atoms here
on Earth were assembled in the stars.
The Evolution of the Universe
• One of the signatures of the Big Bang that persists today is the long-
wavelength radiation that fills the universe. This is radiation left over from
the original explosion. The present temperature of this "background"
radiation is 2.7 K. (The temperature, T, of a gas or plasma and average
particle kinetic energy, E, are related by the Boltzmann constant, k = 1.38 x
10-23 J/K, in the equation E = kT.) Figure 10.1 shows the temperature at
various stages in the time evolution of the universe from the quark-gluon
plasma to the present time.
