The friars used religion to do what they wanted such as enriching themselves and inflicting as well as prosecuting the Filipino patriots;likewise, Rizal would use free masonry as “his shield to combat their cruelty.” March 1883, Rizal formally joined the Masonic Lodge called Acacia in Madrid. He believed that free masonry would help him in his fight against the friars in the Philippines. Through the influenced of Miguel Morayta (a history professor at the Univerdidad de Madrid), Rizal joined Masonry under the Gran Oriente de Español, adopting the Masonic name: DIMANSALANG. Rizal met prominent Spaniards who were mostly masons. He was deeply impressed on how Spanish Masons critized the government policies and lambasted the friars, which could not be done in the Philippines.
