The origins of main fossil fuels, coal,
oil, and gas
 Coal, crude oil, and natural gas are all considered fossil fuels because they
were formed from the fossilized, buried remains of plants and animals that
lived millions of years ago. Because of their origins, fossil fuels have a high
carbon content
 Extracting fossil fuels: There are 2 main methods for removing fossil fuels
from the ground: “mining and drilling”. Mining is used to extract solid fossil
fuels, such as coal, by digging, scraping, or other wise exposing buried
resources. Drilling is used to extract liquid fossil fuels, such as crude oil.
Advantages of using nuclear fuels

 Nuclear energy provides an enormous capacity

 We can reuse the fuel from nuclear energy projects
 Nuclear energy is a safe resource to use
 The cost of nuclear energy is manageable for most countries
 Nuclear energy is a proven and reliable resource
Disadvantages of using nuclear
fuels
 There is always the threat of an accident when working with nuclear energy
 The uranium needed for nuclear energy can also become a weapon
 There is a waste issue to consider with nuclear energy
 Exposure to nuclear materials or uranium can create health problems
 Nuclear energy does not provide us with a renewable energy resource
The effects of human influences on the
environment
 Human Impacts the physical environment in the following ways:
 Overpopulation
 Pollution(land, water, air, and sound)
 Global warming
 Genetic modification(organisms whose DNA has been altered, in a way that does not occur
naturally)
 Burning fossil fuels
 Deforestation
 All these changes have triggered climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable
water.
 Alternative energy sources relating it to its
accessibility and usability in Nigeria
 Hydroelectric energy : a form of energy that harnesses the power of water in motion such as water flowing over a
waterfall to generate electricity
 Solar Power: Solar panel and inverter system.
 Natural gas sources have been in use for several decades, but it is through the progression of compression techniques that
it is becoming a more viable alternative energy source
 Wind Energy: is mostly the use of wind turbines to generate electricity. Historically wind energy has been used in sails,
windmills and windpumps.
 Biomass energy: is energy generated or produced by living or once living organisms.
 Geothermal energy: People use geothermal heat for bathing, to heat buildings, and to generate electricity.
