Introduction

– Applications of High Voltage

– Laboratories for Nuclear research, in particle accelerators, for transmission of
bulk power over large distances, electrostatic precipitators, in automobile
ignition coils, Xray equipment and industrial applications like testing.
– The diverse conditions under which high voltage apparatus is used, necessitates
careful design of its insulation and electrostatic profiles.
– The commonly used insulating media are gases, liquids and solids or a
combination of either of these materials.
Introduction

– For achieving reliability and economy, a knowledge of causes of deterioration,

how it occurs, is essential.
– The tendency to increase in voltage stresses for optimum design calls for
judicious selection of insulation in relation to dielectric strength, corona
discharges, and other relevant factors.
– Hence, the subject includes study of electric stresses, insulating media,
generation and measurement of high voltages, effects and causes of natural
high voltages and non destructive high voltage testing.
