Understanding the Self: Unpacking the Self
WHAT IS SPIRITUAL SELF?
 The spiritual self is the part of us that seeks meaning
and connection.
 It is not about religion, although religion can be a path
to spiritually.
 It is about our deepest values, beliefs, and sense of
purpose.
 It is the part of us that asks questions like “Why am I
here?” “What is my place in the universe?”
WHY IS THE SPIRITUAL SELF
IMPORTANT?
 The spiritual self can provide us with a sense of
peace and well – being.
 It can help us to cope with difficult times.
 It can give us a sense of purpose and direction in
life.
 It can help us to connect with others on a deeper
level.
RELIGIONS AND RITUALS
Ever since the creation of the world from the hook of Genesis, humans expressed
great Faith and even fear toward the supreme being they called God. Although
there's no specific religion yet, they already followed some rituals whenever they
asked favors or forgiveness for the things they thought that caused God's auger, and
believed the reason why some had luck occurred in their lives. The purposes of the
practice of a religion. according to Swineburn (2019) are to achieve the goals of
salvation for oneself and others as well as to render due worship and obedience to
God. In the course of attaining salvation, varied practices or rituals are commended
by different religions. A university research conducted by a cognitive psychologist
Pascal Boyer (2008 in Consider the Gospel 2019) regarding people's faith in God's
existence showed that "religious thoughts seen to be an emergent property of car
standard cognitive capacities.
WORLD RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
AND PRACTICES
There are different kinds of religions. The top three common religions
of the world are Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
1. Christianity
- Christians believe in one eternal God, the creator of heaven and
earth (God the Father).
- They believe in the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and
God the Holy Spirit).
- Religious practices include prayers, fasting, baptism, attending day
of worship, tithing, pilgrimage, communion (eucharist) and
celebrating important religious festivals such as Christmas, Easter and
Pentecost.
2. Islam
-Muslims believe in one transcendent God called
Allah.
-They believe that everything happens according to
Allah’s will.
-Religious practices includes reciting the Islam creed,
praying five times a day, annual fasting from food,
sex, alcohol and smoking for a month. Many
festivities are also celebrated by the followers and
communal practices of invocation are accompanied
with music and ritual dance.
3. Judaism
-Judaism as a religious belief is centered in the presence of only
one God who revealed his self through Abraham, the ancestor of
Jewish people.
-They believe that they should worship God, possess ethical
behavior and perform rituals.
-Religious practices or traditional rituals include circumcision of 8-
day old boys during the day of worship which they called Sabbath
held every Sunday. They also follows the 613 commandments, they
also have set of practices for every special occasions such as during
wedding, naming of newly born babies, burial, worship day, etc.
FINDING AND CREATING
MEANING IN LIFE
 Victor Frankl
-a psychiatrist, neurologist, and the founder of logotherapy.
-he explained that it’s not a human’s obligation to find meaning of life in universal way.
-according to him life is not fair but there are two options that one cand do:

a. Accept that what happened cannot be changed and should not be a prisoner of the
circumstance
b. Accept that what happened cannot be changed but one can change his/her attitude towards
it.
- thus, according to him, a person should adopt a stronger, resilient and positive attitude in
facing life’s challenges to have a better and meaningful life.
CONCLUSION
 The spiritual self is a journey, not a
destination.
 It is a lifelong process of growth and
discovery.
 By exploring your spiritual self, you can find
greater meaning and purpose in life.
