WHAT IS AN INJURY?

INJURY

Is damage to the body that can be a result of an accident


or an intentional act. Thus, injuries can be considered
intentional or unintentional.
INTENTIONAL INJURIES

Refer to injuries resulting from intented human actions


or activities, of which includes self-inflicted and
interpersonal acts of violence that cause harm.
Some of the major risk factors are:
self-inflicted violence
History of intentional injuries
Alcohol abuse
Mental illness
poverty
UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES

are those injuries that are not inflicted


purposely and that occur without
intent of harm. These unplanned events
can include falls, motor vehicle crashes,
and poisoning.
T YPES OF
INTENTIONAL INJURIES
A. BULLYING
Acts of bullying are types of
injuries that are intentionally done.
Recently, bullying has been widespread
through internet or cyber media.
• Bullying affects your behavior
• It leads to unhealthy relationships
with your friends, classmates and
family member.
How will you protect yourself from bullying in
school or at home?

You can talk to an adult you trust.


Your parent is your first family member to give you
support and love to make you feel secure.
You can also talk to your trusted teacher and school
councelor.
Talking is a good outlet for your fears and maintaining
confidence.
CYBERBULLYING

Is the use of electronic


technology like cellular phones,
computers, and tablets the
threaten and embarrass a
person. These are in the forms of
sending, posting, and sharing
negative and fake information
about someone else that appears
through SMS(Short Message
Service), text and etc.
How will you protect yourself from
cyberbullying?
a. Report Cyberbullying – when someone you know is
bullying you through SMS messaging. Social media
messaging . Or emails, you can report it immediately
to the school administrator, barangay, or social
services.
b. Be safe online – Passwords protect your email, social
media accounts, and your smartphone devices.
B. STALKING

Is repeated pattern of
actions that makes a victim
scared, tense, and harassed. It
is when someone frequently
makes phone calls or sends
online messages, follows in
his/her whereabouts.
What should you do if you are being
stalked?
a. Jot down every incident which includes time, date,
and location. If it happened online , take screenshots
as evidence.
b. Get help from trusted adults like parents,
councelors, police, and friends.
c. File a complaint with yiur barangay officials.
d. Always keep evidence like photos, text messages,
videos, emails, etc.
e. Tell people about the stalking incident.
f. Avoid the person stalking to you and do not
respond to any form of communication.
C. EXTORTION
Is the acquiring of a person’s
property or money against
his/her will. Anyone who
commits this act is called an
extortionist. Extortion is a crime.
When an extortionist is proven
guilty, he/she will be imprisoned.
Bribery and blackmail are the
most abvious type of extortion.
How will you protect yourself from
extortion?

a. Gather all evidence and information, whether written


or spoken threats.
b. Report immediately the incident to the proper
authorities.
c. Know and protect your rights by seeking help from a
public lawyer.
D. GANG AND YOUTH VIOLENCE

A gang is a group of
adolescents who band together.
Gang members are mostly
involved in serious youth violence
like extortion, theft, and
robbery, selling drugs, causing to
injuries to their victims, and
even killing.
E. Illegal Fraternity-Related Violence
A fraternity is a group with a
common purpose or interest.
Fraternities are mostly based in colleges
and universities. Most youths join
fraternities for sense of belongingness.
However, becoming a part of a
brotherhood would mean undergoing
physical and mental initiation rites.
These rites include hazing, which is
considered illegal in our country, causing
a lot of injuries and may lead to death.
F. Kidnapping and Abduction
Kidnapping is a criminal
offense that involves taking away a
person by force or fraud and
ransoming him/her from his/her
family for his/her safe release.
A person who is forcefully
taken away will be detained in an
isolated or abandoned area as a
hostage. A person who keeps a
hostage is called a kidnapper.
G. ABDUCTION
Abduction is an unlawfull act of
taking or stealing a child from
his/her parent. It is also a means of
destroying a family relationship in
cases where the child’s parents are
divorced or legally separated.
The parent who does not have
custody of the child will often commit
the act. Kidnappers and abductors
may intentionally hurt or injure their
victims just to get what they want.
What are the effects of being
kidnapped and abducted?
a. Fear and anxiety
b. Lack of trust
c. Anger
d. Trauma
e. A feeling of helplessness
H. Acts of Terror
An Act of terror is a criminal act
that aims to instigate a state of fear in
the general public, a group, or a
particular person.
Terrorist groups create terror using
violence, fear, and intimidation, drawing
the attention of the local populace,
government, and the world to their
cause. Their actions usually result in
injuries and deaths.
I. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence is a pattern of
abusive behavior of which the purpose
is to control family members, children,
intimate partners, and spouses.
The violence occurs in a domestic
setting or at home, and the abusive
person may be partner, parent,
caregiver, or relative.
This is the reason why this is
called family violence.
J. SUICIDE
Suicide is the act of directly killing
oneself due to severe depression or
other mental illnesses. The main risk
factors for suicide are the following:
 Severe depression
 Substance abuse disorder
 Family history of mental health
disorder
 Sexual abuse
 Medical illness
K. SEXUAL VICTIMIZATION AND OTHER FORMS
OF SEXUAL ABUSE AND HARASSMENT
Most children are victims of sexual
abuse. Sometimes, it was abuse by family
members or close friends.
all children want to be hugged,
kissed, and cuddled to feel that they have
a special relationship with their parents
and other caring adults. Adults who
respond in this way are committing an
act of sexual abuse.
There are several tips on how to protect
yourself and your family from sexual
abuse.
Sexual abuse
Is sexual behavior such as
gestures, contact, and
inappropriate sexual remarks that
can happen to a person without
his/her consent.
The following are some examples
of sexual abuse:
1. Unwanted kiss or touch
2. Unwanted violent/painful sexual activity
3. Rape or attempted rape
4. Refusal to use methods of birth control (e.g., condoms)
5. Sexual contact with a drunk, drugged, unconscious, or unable
to tell a clear “eyes” or “no” person
6. Threats against someone into doing an unwanted sexual
activity.
7. Repeated pressure on someone into sex or to perform sex
act.
8. Repeated sexual insults.
What are the forms of sexual abuse?

a. Molestation – is the sexual abuse of an adult to a


person, either child or adult, fir sexual pleasure or
profit. These activities include child pornography, child
prostitution, sodomy, and fondling.
b. Rape – is a sexual assault by sexual penetration
without consent or when the victim is not capable of
giving consent.
c. Incest – is a sexual relationship between close relatives.
Most incest cases happen in the form of an older family
member sexually abusing or having a sexual relationship
with a child or an adolescent.
Who are rape victims?

The Anti-rape law of 1997 reclassified rape as a


crime against persons from it previous classification as a
crime against chastity. It is an offense punishable by law.

According to Republic Act No. 8353, known as the


Anti-Rape Law of 1997, rape is committed under the
following circumstances:
a. A man has sexual intercourse with a woman:
• Through force, threat or intimidation
• When the victim is deprive of reason or is unconscious
• Through grave abuse of authority
• When the victim is under 12 years of age.
b. Any person who, under any of the above conditions,
commits an act of sexual assault through oral or anal
sex or by inserting an instrument or object into the
anal or genital part of another person.
How do you protect yourself and your
family from sexual abuse?
a. Be watchful of your surroundings. See to it that nobody is following you.
b. Do not travel alone when it is dark
c. Lock the doors of your house when you are alone
d. Consider carrying pepper spray
e. Take a self-defense class
f. Fo not talk to strangers
g. Remember to yell when an abuser approaches you
h. Inform the proper authority of nay incriminating photos you discover on
someone’s electronic gadgets.
i. Report to the police any untoward incident
j. Get a dog that will alert you of any intruders
k. Travel in groups
l. Do not go to dangerous places.
