Introduction :
• The systematic research began 1773 when
Scheele observed the adsorption of air by
charcoal using a volumetric apparatus.
▪️ Physical adsorption :
This type of adsorption is also known as physisorption.
It is due to weak Van der Waals forces between
adsorbate and adsorbent.
For example, H2 and N2 gases adsorb on coconut
charcoal.
▪️Chemical adsorption :
When the gas molecules or atoms are held to the solid
surface by Chemical bonds the adsorption is termed
chemical adsorption or chemisorption. Page 5
