 Introduction :
• The systematic research began 1773 when
Scheele observed the adsorption of air by
charcoal using a volumetric apparatus.

• Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions or

molecules from a gas, liquid or dissolved
solid to a surface. This process creates a
film of the adsorbate on .

• Types of adsorption :

▪️ Physical adsorption :
This type of adsorption is also known as physisorption.
It is due to weak Van der Waals forces between
adsorbate and adsorbent.
For example, H2 and N2 gases adsorb on coconut
charcoal.
▪️Chemical adsorption :
When the gas molecules or atoms are held to the solid
surface by Chemical bonds the adsorption is termed
chemical adsorption or chemisorption. Page 5
ex. the iron is heated in N2 gas

• Freundlich Adsorption Isotherm:

• 1909- Freundlich gave an empirical expression

representing the isothermal variation.

• Adsorption of a quantity of gas adsorbed by unit

mass of solid adsorbent with pressure.

• Equation is known as Freundlich Adsorption

Isotherm or Freundlich Adsorption equation or
simply Freundlich Isotherm.

• Freundlich Isotherm :

◾The Freundlich adsorption isotherm is mathematically expressed as

Page 8
 FREUNDLICH EQUATION
А = x/m = k · p1/n G = x/m = КF · Cn

х – the amount of substance of the

adsorptive (mole)
m – mass of adsorbent
p – equilibrium gas pressure,
С – equilibrium concentration
in systemV adsorption = V desorption
к – Freundlich constant, к = А at р = 1
n – empirical constant.

Application of Adsorption :

◾ Production of high vaccume

◾Control of humidity
◾seperation of inhert gas
◾In curing diseases
◾Chromatographic analysis
◼Conclusion :

◾ This process is seen in natural, biological,

physical, chemical system
◾ In industrial process like heterogeneous
catalysis, in pharmaceutical, industry
◾ Thus adsorption plays a vital role in our day to
day life requirements
