What is a narrative essay?
• A narrative essay is an essay that tells a story about a personal or
made-up experience, and is narrated by the author.
IMPORTANT:
1. Remember the five (5) W’s (Who? What? When? Where? Why?
2. A story has at least the following; characters, plot, setting, conflict
and climax.
Structure of an essay
1. Introduction
• The introduction should catch the reader’s attention.
• If it’s a person, begin with a description of the person and then
mention why that person mattered.
• If it’s an event, begin with the action or begin by reflecting back on
why the event mattered, then go into the narrative.
• It must be striking and entice the reader to continue reading.

2. Body
• The body comprises the full content of the essay.
• The body must be divided into paragraphs, each of which must have a
main idea with supporting details.
• You must have rising action, climax, falling action and a lesson
learned.
• It is advisable to have at least three body paragraphs.
3. Conclusion
• The conclusion effectively rounds off your essay.
• Summarise the essay’s main point and how the events in the story
support it.
• For example, you can start your conclusion like this; ‘Through this
experience, I learned that….’
• Reflect on the significance of the experience and what you have
learned from it.
