* Modals: Can, could, may, might, must, will, would, shall, should
* Verbs of the senses:
Smell, see, hear, feel, watch, observe, notice }+ Obj +bare inf ,
+ Obj + present participle
* Other verbs: let, make, help } + Obj + bare inf
+ She lets her children stay up late.
+ I heard him lock the door.
+ I see him passing my house everyday.
+ She smelt sth burning.
Verb followed by gerunds
- finish - suggest
- admit - deny
- avoid - delay
- resist - postpone
- discuss - practice
- enjoy - understand
- consider
- dislike - mention
- risk - prevent
- keep = (continue)
+ There ‘s nothing to prevent him (from) taking the money.
+ You mention having been in hospital last year.
+ He admitted stealing the money.
+ She avoided answering my question.
Verb followed by either infinitives or gerunds
a> Verb +inf / gerund (with no difference in meaning)
- begin - choose
- start - prefer
- continue - intend
- attempt - like
- permit - propose
- allow - love
- stand - hate
- advise
Eg: - We don’t allow smoking in the lecture room.
- We don’t allow people to smoke in class.
* Like:
Like + gerund : to enjoy
Eg: I like walking in the rain.
Like + to inf : choose to, be in the habit of, think it is right to
Eg: I like to get up early, so I can get plenty of work done before lunch.
Verbs + inf / gerund (with a difference in meaning)
a. Remember + to inf: Remember to perform a responsibility, duty or task (nhớ
chưa lam)
Remember + gerund: remember sth that happened in the past (nhớ đa lam)
b. Forget + to inf: forget to perform a responsibility, duty or task
Forget +gerund: forget sth that happened in the past
c. Regret + to inf : be sorry for what one is going to say
Regret + gerund: be sorry for what has happened
d. Try + to inf: make an effort
Try + gerund: do sth as an experiment
e. Stop + to inf of purpose: to make a break in order to do sth
Stop + gerund: give up : Stop what one is doing
f. Mean + to inf: intend (co y dinh)
Eg: I am sorry to hurt you. I did not mean to.
Mean + gerund: involve (doi hoi)
Eg: This new idea will mean (us) working overtime.
g. Go on + to inf: move to the next thing
Eg: After attacking the government ‘s economic policy, he went on to describe
how the Labor Party would reduce unemployment.
Expressions are followed by a V-ing:
It’s no use:
Eg: It’s no use_ buying books but not reading them
_ helping him
_ worrying about it, there’s nothing you can do
It’s no good:
Eg: It’s no good _ trying to persuade her, you won’t succeed.
_ telling them the truth
It is useless
Eg: It will be useless learning a theory without practice
Be busy
Eg: My mother is busy cooking in the kitchen
Be (get) used to
Eg: I get used to getting up early in the morning
Be worth
Eg: + It isn’t worth repairing
