Number System

What is a number system?


• •A system for representing number of certain type.
• A number system defines a set of values used to represent
quantity.
• Example:
These include the usual base “10” or decimal system :
0,1,2,3,…..10,11,12,..99,100,…
Number System
• Decimal is the number system and is used in our day to
day life
• Binary is a number system that is used in computers
• Octal is a number system that represents groups of
binary numbers. It is used in digital displays.
• Hexadecimal (Hex) is a number system that represents
groups of binary numbers. Hex is primarily used in
computing.
Different Number System
• Decimal Number System – 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and Base 10
Example : 12 base 10; 101 base 10; 509 base 10
• Binary Number System - 1 and 0 only and Base 2
Example : 110 base 2; 01110 base 2; 10101010 base 2
• Octal Number System – 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7, and Base 8
Example: 17 base 8 ; 378 base 8; 110 base 8
• Hexadecimal Number System – 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F
and Base 16
Example : 1B2 base 16; ABC base 16; 67F base 16
Binary Table
• Like an ASCII table, a binary
table contains a two-
dimensional data matrix
mapped into the rows and
columns of a table. The entries,
the values associated with a
given row and column, are
stored in one of several
prescribed binary formats,
rather than coded into ASCII.
Decimal Table
• Decimal, also called Hindu-
Arabic, or Arabic, number
system, in mathematics,
positional numeral system
employing 10 as the base and
requiring 10 different numerals,
the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
9. It also requires a dot (decimal
point) to represent decimal
fractions.
Octadecimal
• The octal numeral system, or
oct for short, is the base-8
number system, and uses the
digits 0 to 7. Octal numerals can
be made from binary numerals
by grouping consecutive binary
digits into groups of three
(starting from the right).
Hexadecimal
• Hexadecimal Numbering System use
the numbers from 0 to 9 and the
capital letters A to F to represent its
Binary or Decimal number equivalent.
• It is a more complex system than
using just binary or decimal and is
mainly used when dealing with
computers and memory address
locations. By dividing a binary number
up into groups of 4 bits, each group or
set of 4 digits
