OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lecture, students will be able to:
1. Identify, define, and spell word roots associated with the digestive system.

2. Provide the correct spelling of digestive system terms given the definition
of the term.

3. Analyze the digestive system terms by defining the roots, prefixes, and
suffixes of these terms.

4. Identify, define, and spell disease, disorder, and procedure terms related to
the digestive system.
The human digestive system consists of the
gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory
organs of digestion (salivary glands,
pancreas, liver, and gallbladder).

Gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the


passageway of the digestive system that
leads from the mouth to the anus.

The GI tract contains all the major organs


of the digestive system including the
esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

Meaning: anus

Anal: related to the anus


Append/o-: appendix
Appendectomy: removal of the Appendix
Appendic/o-: appendix
Appendicitis: inflammation of the appendix
Chole/o-: bile (gall)

Cholecyst/o-: gall bladder

Cholecystectomy: removal of the gall


bladder
Col/o-:colon
Colon/o-: colon

Colonoscopy: visual examination of the colon

Colostomy: creating a new opening of the


colon to the outside of the body

the small intestines)

Hepatomegaly: enlargement of the


liver
Ile/o-: ileum (last part of the small
intestines)

Ileostomy: creating a new opening of the


ileum (last part of the small intestines) to
the outside of the body

Jejun/o-: jejunum (second part of the


small intestines)

Oral: related to the mouth

Stomatitis: inflammation of the mouth

Pharyng/o-: pharynx (throat)

Pharyngeal: related to the pharynx (throat)


Proct/o-: anus and rectum

Proctoscopy: visual examination of the anus and rectum

Rect/o-: rectum

Rectocele: hernia of the rectum


Sigmoid/o-: sigmoid colon

Sigmoidoscopy: visual examination of the sigmoid colon

Sialaden/o-: salivary glands

Sialadenitis: inflammation of the salivary glands


PATHOLOGY

1. Cholelithiasis: abnormal condition of gallstones

2. Hepatitis: inflammation of the liver

3. Jaundice: yellow coloring of the skin and other tissues


Diagnostic and Treatment Procedures

1. Cholangiography: x-ray examination of the bile ducts

2. Gastroscopy: visual examination of the stomach

3. Esophagoscopy: visual examination of the esophagus

4. Gastrointestinal endoscopy: visual examination of the digestive


system by inserting a long, flexible lighted instrument either through
the rectum or down through the throat.

5. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): a condition in which the


content of the stomach flows back to the esophagus
