KWAME NKRUMAH
THE BIRTH AND PARENST OF KWAME NKRUMAH

• Kwame Nkrumah was born on Tuesday, 21 September 1909 in Nkroful, Gold Coast (now
Ghana). Nkroful was a small village in the Nzema area, in the southwest of the Gold
Coast, close to the frontier with the French colony of the Ivory Coast. His mother hailed
from Nsuaem and belonged to the Agona family. She was a fishmonger and petty trader
when she married his father.
THE CHILDHOOD OF KWAME NKRUMAH

• Kwame Nkrumah was raised by his mother and his extended family, who lived together
traditionally and had more distant relatives often visiting. He lived a carefree childhood,
spent in the village, in the bush, and on the nearby sea.The real name of Kwame
Nkrumah is Francis Nwia-Kofi Ngonloma.
THE EDUCATION OF KWAME NKRUMAH

• Raised a Roman Catholic, Kwame Nkrumah attended Catholic day schools and graduated
from Achimota College in 1930. A few years later, he moved to the United States to
pursue master's degrees at Linco University and the University of Pennsylvania. Kwame
Nkrumah arrived in Philadelphia in 1935 to begin undergraduate study at Lincoln
University. After completing a bachelor's degree in sociology magna cum laude, Lincoln
admitted him to its Theological Seminary in 1939 for an additional degree in sacred
theology.
THE WIFE OF KWAME NKRUMAH

• Fathia Nkrumah was born to a Coptic Christian family and brought up in Zeitoun,
a district of Cairo. She was the first child of a civil servant who died early; Fathia
was raised by her mother single-handedly after her father's death. She was born
to Fathia Halim Rizk in Zeitoun, Cairo, in 1932. Her father worked as a clerk in
an Egyptian telephone company and died early, leaving her mother widowed and
having to raise Fathia single-handed. She was the eldest of five children in the
family.
THE DEATH OF KWAME NKRUMAH

• In 1972, Kwame Nkrumah died in Bucharest, Romania. According to some sources the
reason for his death was cancer. However, his close relatives believed there was a chance
he was being poisoned by Western agents. His health began rapidly failing after the
mysterious death of his chef while in exile in Guinea.
