Strategies towards supporting

the use of GenerativeAI

within Higher Education

29 Feb 2024
GAI tools
Generative Artificial Intelligence(GAI) is an
innovative technology which enables the
generation of human-like text and facilitating
automated conversations through making use of
machine learning and deep learning techniques.

GAI tools have been widely adopted in education

practises by both students and staff at the higher
education level to assist them achieving variety of
education tasks such as training, generating ideas,
assignment checking, and revision.

Is there is negative impact?

• As shown in a recent study that one in three

university students have used GAI tools to write
their assignments.
• Recent studies highlighted another concern in
relation to the impact of GAI tools on students
writing and critical thinking skills as they
become more reliant on these tools to complete
their assignments.

Research task by
students
Interact with ChatGPT to explore different research
ideas and receive feedback:
1. Can you suggest potential research topics
related to climate change?
2. Research topics related to climate change?

Which question gives better answer?

- The way how you ask the question matters? If

yes, what tip you would give students to write a
good question on chatGPT.
Research task by

Interact with ChatGPT to explore different research
ideas and receive feedback:

• What are some key issues or challenges in

climate change research?
• How can I narrow down my research
question to focus on a specific aspect of
climate change?
Reflection:

•What do you think?

research brainstorming and
topic refinement?
Integrating ChatGPT into Teaching

Scenario: Professor Smith teaches a computer science class focused on algorithms and data structures at a university. In an effort to make lectures
more engaging and interactive for students, Professor Smith decides to incorporate ChatGPT into the classroom environment.
Implementation Plan:
Introduction to ChatGPT :
• Professor Smith introduces ChatGPT to the class, explaining its capabilities as an AI-powered chatbot capable of generating human-like text
responses.
• Students learn about the potential applications of ChatGPT in various domains, including education and computer science.
Interactive Q&A Sessions:
• During lecture sessions, Professor Smith incorporates interactive Q&A sessions where students can ask ChatGPT questions related to the course
material.
• Students engage with ChatGPT to review key concepts, clarify doubts, and explore real-world applications of algorithms and data structures.
Algorithmic Problem-Solving Challenges:
• Professor Smith organizes algorithmic problem-solving challenges where students work in teams to solve coding problems.
• ChatGPT serves as a virtual mentor, providing hints, suggestions, and feedback to students as they tackle complex algorithmic problems.
• Teach students how to overcome specific coding issues they are facing, rather than use chatGPT to generate a complete code.
Group Projects and Presentations :
• ChatGPT assists students throughout the project lifecycle, from brainstorming ideas and refining project proposals to troubleshooting coding
issues and preparing presentations.
Integrating ChatGPT into Teaching

•Is there any specific guideline/policy of how to

use ChatGPT in class teaching?
•Affects creativity?
•Impact on engagement?
Assessment Design using ChatGPT

• Use chatGPT to help with the assessment design of a computer science unit:

The initial question to be asked using chatGPT:

I'm preparing an assessment for my --------- unit and could use some assistance with
designing questions. Can you help?

Reflection:

•What are the follow up questions you’ve asked?

•Did you get good answers (critical, more in-depth)?
•To which level you recommend using chatGPT in assessment design?
Designing Assessments which are not directly solvable by
chatGPT

•Focus on Problem-Solving
•Hands-On Coding Tasks
•Algorithm Design and Analysis
•System Design and Architecture
•Critical Thinking and Analysis
Designing Assessment which not
directly solvable by chatGPT

Using chatGPT, do the following task:

Task : Write an essay discussing the impact of

artificial intelligence on society, including its
benefits and challenges.

•Check if this is solvable by chatGPT. If yes, can

you suggest a change on the task to make it not
directly solvable by chatGPT.

•Reflection??
Marking using ChatGPT

- Use chatGPT to help with the assessment marking:

The initial question to be asked using chatGPT:

- I have a sample essay from a student that I'd like you to help me mark. Could you assist with providing feedback
based on the provided rubric?

rubric:
The essay prompt asks students to analyse the effects of climate change on biodiversity. I'll be assessing students on their
understanding of the topic, use of evidence, coherence of argument, and writing quality.

Essay Sample:
Title: Climate Change's Biodiversity Impact
Climate change shrinks habitats, leading to biodiversity loss. Extreme weather worsens the problem. Urgent action is needed.
Focus groups:

• Scenario 1: Interactive Learning Activities: • Scenario 2: Ethical Considerations and

Guidelines:

o Describe a scenario where lecturers incorporate ChatGPT into

interactive learning activities, such as virtual classrooms or o Discuss the ethical implications of using ChatGPT in education,
online forums. including privacy, data security, and algorithmic bias.
o Illustrate how ChatGPT can engage students in discussions, o Provide guidelines for maintaining academic integrity, avoiding
provide real-time feedback on assignments, and answer plagiarism, and citing ChatGPT-generated content appropriately.
questions related to course material.
o Discuss how lecturers can define the polices and regulations of
using ChatGPT by students as a support tool in their
assignments.
