Precipitation and Runoff …

Precipitation and Runoff

Precipitation is water that falls from the

atmosphere to the Earth's surface.

Runoff is precipitation that does not soak into

the soil but instead moves on the Earth's
surface toward streams.

(Streamflow and runoff are related concepts, but they are

not exactly the same.)

Surface Retention…

Surface Retention
Surface retention includes interception, depression
storage, and evaporation during the storm but does not
include water temporarily detained on route to the
streams.

 Interception is the process of interrupting the

movement of water in the chain of transportation
events leading to streams.
 Depression storage refers to small low points in

undulating terrain that can store precipitation that

otherwise would become runoff.

Runoff Mechanisms…

Runoff Infiltration
Mechanisms
Runoff occurs as Infiltration is the process
infiltration excess or by which water on the
saturation excess when ground surface enters the
surface water inputs (rainfall soil.
or snowmelt) exceed the
infiltration capacity of the
soil

Precipitation-Runoff Relation…

Precipitation-Runoff Relation
 The precipitation-runoff relation refers to the
relationship between the amount of precipitation
that falls on a watershed and the resulting runoff
that occurs as a result of that precipitation.

 It describes how much of the precipitation that

falls on an area actually ends up as runoff into
streams, rivers, lakes, or other water bodies.
